Need Help! Major leakage...

I have a Mares Star mask and the thing is constantly leaking. If I can get a good seal before I get wet it will hold all day but if I have to adjust it or empty some water out of it or defog it I can never get it to seal back up. I dove last night and it was miserable having to take it off to clear the water out of it after every bottom dive only to have it fill back up as I was searching for bugs. I dont know if I need to get a better mask or if it is something I am doing wrong. Any advice would be very appreciated.Thank you in advance!

Do have a mustache? Try using some chap stick on your upper lip.

If you are wearing a hood, make sure the mask skirt is inside the hood after you clear it. Also check how tight you have your strap. You should be able to easily pull the mask away from your face a couple inches. If the strap is too tight, it may deform the skirt and prohibit it from making a seal on your face.

If it is only filling with water when you invert, I would look at the seal under your nose. I have to shave the upper part of my mustache, if I want a good seal.

Funny, I was out yesterday evening and I hadn't shaved since monday and I was having a shiety time getting a seal too. Contributed it to being in a new wetsuit with a hood for the first time and thought I had some adjusting to do.

Ok, so i'm serious on this one.................

Use vaseline if you got the devil's whiskers! If don't believe me, ask Reef Joker, It worked great for him.

Or maybe the mask just doesn't fit you, having the right one makes a world of difference.

I see you are in Trabuco Canyon, I live in Mission Viejo by Trabuco Hills High School and i got a Riffe Frameless you can borrow and see how it works for you.

Re: Need Help! Major leakage...

Thanks for the replies guys. I do not have a mustache and I dont think my hood was in the way...I'll have to check tonight if it is or not. I think I may just have to buy a new mask that fits my face better. What are your thought on a scuba mask vs. freedive mask for me.

Re: Need Help! Major leakage...

freedivng mask has less volume something a scuba diver shouldn't have to worry about to much. A scuba mask usually has bigger windows!

Re: Need Help! Major leakage...

You might still want to try lining it with a thin layer of silicon gel from a dive shop or vaseline, it would probably seal pretty well.

Re: Need Help! Major leakage...

Before going out and buying a new mask, do a quick check to see if the one you have fits correctly. Place the mask on your face without putting the strap around your head and breathe in slightly through your nose to suction the mask to your face. If your mask actually fits you, the mask will stay on your face without air leaking in past the skirt. If air starts coming in through the seal around your face, then it's time to get one that fits better.

Re: Need Help! Major leakage...

When I wear one of my regular scuba Steve masks, I never have any leakage. When I use my low volume freedive masks, they almost always leak.

Why? I finally figured it out after a ton of leaky trips. I have light blue eyes and I'm really light sensitive. Whenever I get in the water, the NorCoast overcast causes me to squint, since all of my masks are clear glass. The high volume mask skirts allow the flex, but the squinting and wrinkling of the skin near my eyes makes my low volume masks leak like a screen door in a rainstorm.

Moral of the story? Stop squinting, wear scuba Steve masks, or get a something with a tint. Works for me.

That, and I always shave whenever possible before going out on my God given right to feed the family, no thanks to MLPA's.
