San Clemente Island Report 7/11-12

went offshore on the multiple recent reports of squid and game fish in pyramid. Ended up taking a crew of 3 YT virgin young divers
everyone had sightings of both YT and WSB (some very big WSB)
and one guy popped his cherry and put 2 YT on the boat (congrads goleta spero)

we did not have the epic water clarity i have had grown to love anout SCI and many locations on the front side were undivable for YT

but the areas around the cove were good in the mornings with 20-30ft blue-green vis and 63-64 degree water temps

I had six fish sightings in two full days of diving
my Wong MAHI and ONO served me well
All but one fish were out 15-25 feet

I played it safe on this trip using a tank to retrieve 2 fish
one YT tied up at 78ft
one WSB tied up at 52 ft just as the sun was setting at the end of a full day of diving

the best moment of the trip for me was being congradulated by a 22y/o who told me how much more energy i had then him

Very nice! Good call on using the tank on the deeper fish. No sense putting anyone in a sketchy situation for some chest thumping.

Re: San Clemente Island Report 7/11-12

What a great trip! Joe knows his spots and put us on the fish. Seriously for being 42, Joe charges it hard; he spends more time in the water than anyone else pretty much and survives his days on vitamin water and energy drinks.

After suiting up and joining the rest of the crew, I was in the water. I made my first or second dive to 40' on the fringes of the bait and saw a smaller, single YT and took him. He was my first YT, and now that being skunked on the trip was no longer an option I was stoked!

I hunted hard for whites, and saw none, although everyone else spotted them and some lost fish due to technical difficulties (no slip-tip and under gunned were popular mistakes).

I shot my second YT at the end of the first day; this one of better size. The second day I had a nice shot on another, but re-rigging my gun the night before I made a mistake and there was a wrap around my line anchor, which prevented my shaft from going all the way; lost a YT and had perfect shot and everything .

Had nice shots on both fish and ended up with some gorgeous, fat YT fillets

Mike Haakenson and his son were great deckhand and captain. Mike Sr. went scuba diving at 100' and saw a huge WSB! What a trip! We had been hearing the most obnoxious croaking I have ever heard. They were feeding and mating deep.

Thanks again joe. I am always down if you have an opening!

First SCI trip and a trip I will never forget. That place is awesome.

There were a few times on our last trip that the croaking was so loud and deep I could feel it in my chest. They sounded deep to me too. Unfortunately there has never been a correlation between croaking and fish sitings for me.

Awesome report Joe. It's great that a knowledgeable mentor can take young guns out and show them the ropes.
