Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
Hi,
I'm new to the Santa Barbara area and am looking for somewhere I can get some depth after a reasonable surface swim for line training. Ideally I'd like 45m but 20-30m would be better than nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
The coast along SB is very gradual we don't have any real good drop offs that I'm aware of. You'll need to get fairly far offshore to find those kinds of depths. Looks like your best bet is either off the Mesa or near the Tajiguas area. Take a look at the Navionics app for the bottom contours. You may need a kayak...

about an 1.3hr north of Santa Barbara is Spooners Cove (just south of Morro Bay). Should have the depths you are looking for not far from shore.

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
Thanks for the info Lompoc and Bluesman!
I like the idea of Spooner's Cove but it's 110 miles so it's probably closer to 2 hours with any sort of traffic. There's always Redondo but that 2.5 hours. I'll check out Mesa. What about La Jenelle park at Oxnard/Hueneme? The web suggests there's 80ft which is better than 40 and it's <60 miles. Anyone have any info/experience with that site? Ideally somewhere no more than an hour drive would be great. Or I need a kayak or better yet a friend with a boat! Feel free to PM me if there's somewhere you know about that you'd rather not see published on the web. I used to rock climb a lot so I am very familiar with keeping info close to the chest. |

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
45 meters is scratching close to 150 foot depth. You're not finding that at any of those spots with a swim out- or even kayak. You could get on an Island packers and find some nice water and depth in the Fall but it's probably not a regular routine solution. The three places I would say are La Jolla Shores dive park- in the canyon, the Channel Islands area or in Monterey Bay out in the trench. Or you could set up a float and drift dive in the channel when you get to the blue water. Don't forget your safety buddy and your lanyard.

It may be around that depth, but you will be in a shipping lane/entrance to a Navy base. Port Ops will be on you before your first dive.

FYI, you can even use the online chartviewer if you do not have the app installed on your phone: http://webapp.navionics.com |

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
Depending on water levels, you might try Lake Cachuma.
45m is a depth where you will need both: 1. professional training along with plenty of experience 2. a dive buddy similarly qualified or: you will die http://spearboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=296 there are places like performance freediving that will train you

Re: Looking for Depth Near Santa Barbara
there are definitely spots in Malibu that get to those depths, but you will need a kayak or boat.
