Re: Giant Limpets or Turban Snails edible?

owl limpits are good, just stick them upsideown on the grill or as fire, so they cook in their own juices. eat while they are hot otherwise they toughen up.
anyone looking to get a bnch of these in the SB area should hit up the goleta pipeline

Me and a buddy used to take swiss army knives down to the rocks and eat them raw. That was when I was 12 or 13 yrs old. I have not had them in a long time. I will have to check it out. Those snails sound yummy. I am going to pick one up next time and give it a taste.

Limpets are the best!!!Raw or grilled with a little bit of butter, portuguese pepper sauce and garlic. Back in the azores they get pretty darn big , and are one of the most delicious sea food there. Anyone that comes to the Islands to visit cannot leave with trying them.

How do you prepare turban snail? Smash the shell then pull out the meat? I would assume that you're only eating the muscle/foot so trim the guts? Any recipes? Seems like people have only been talking about limpets.

I may have to try these, I'm always seeing ones the size of softballs when I'm crawling around the rocks looking for cabs.

Wow, you sure about that?

Tegula spp. AKA Turban snails are about the size of a gumball.

Keyhole limpets, Megathura crenulata, on the other hand are pretty big and are preyed on by starfish.

Those are the wavy top snails aka astraea snail, Astraea undosa. I've seen Mexicans (in Mexico) collecting them by the hundreds. So, I'm guessing they were using them for more than decoration.

Edit: My bad, after doing some research they're other common name is turban snail. I've never heard that before because the smaller one's I posted are generally called turban snails. sorry

Oh, the site I found them on described them as wavy turban top snails so that's were the confusion arose. Regardless, can you eat these or are they crap?

Re: Giant Limpets or Turban Snails edible?

Wait, so the people that were talking about having eaten turban snails, were they referring to these

or these

Also, Mike you should definitely try the California whelks, a buddy of mine was hooping while I was diving and pulled up some smaller ones in the net. He gave them to me to try saying that they were amazing, and they're some of the best shellfish I've had. You just boil them for about 10 minutes, pick them out and cut off the black parts, then serve them however you'd like.

Here's a pic, I only pick the ones over 3", and have seen them up to 6" at local markets They're also predatory and a nuisance, so it helps the local reefs to eat them.

Thanks! I will try those. Maybe this winter when the fish thin out.

Re: Giant Limpets or Turban Snails edible?

wow - I'll have to collect a few of the big snails and whelks and eat em next time (after properly ID'ing and making sure they arent poison of course.. heh).. I see the big conical 'turbans' all the time... Looks like 2 would make a meal, no idea how to prepare something like that tho... Better start keeping a bucket o seawater handy in the van...
