All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

Re: bamboo polespear?

I mean drill through the whole thing. Down the center , through each compartment. When you go in the water hold it tip down so all the air goes out. If after that, ballast as needed. I like a neutral in saltwater spear or gun, when loaded.

Re: bamboo polespear?

This old Japanese dude figured it out. Apparently he's out there slaying it with a bamboo polespear. The end notes scroll by really fast, but from what I can make out he cut some bamboo from up in the mountains to make his bamboo polespear.

Re: bamboo polespear?

This sounds really nice

Would it be cheating... if you put one layer of fiber glass cloth on/around it? The layer would be totally transparent so would keep that valued wood look. And it would add strength

Re: bamboo polespear?

This isn't bamboo, but the idea is similar - a hardwood stick, and bungie cords.

Re: bamboo polespear?

Project has been on a slight backburner (making a living is getting in the way lol). Im going to pick a straight piece and cut it and lay it flat to dry out, sand it and then im thinking of wrapping it in fiberglass tape with clear epoxy or carbon fiber. But the carbon will killed the "look" ..
I would love to know how the Japanese guy fixed the tip to the bamboo, any ideas?

Anyhow. Food for thought.

Go watch some u-tube videos on casting, It's not too hard. Just takes a little time.

I still want to build a nice forge. This stuff is pretty neat. I got some arrowheads I plan on casting at some point.
I am in the process of making a bamboo pole spear. Bamboo is pretty amazing. I would like to get some of these connectors (Linghunt, I sent you and email). The trick is you don's sand the bamboo to fit, you heat it and compress it to the exact diameter. No loss of strength that way. All the strength is in the outer layers. Also bamboo is light which is great since it will move faster and with a heavy 12" spear shaft on the tip the FOC (front of center, I use this in archery) is high so penetration is high. With testing I penetrated 1/2" plywood which surprised me.

The video is great thanks.
