Seal problems
Hello,
I have been spearfishing in the central California area. Lately there has been a harbor seal that will not leave me alone. I went yesterday and before I had a chance to shoot any fish he was nipping my fins and swimming within a few feet of me. He came face to face with me; I held out my speargun threateningly (without touching him) but he gently nipped the gun. He never left within a few feet of me until I exited the water. What do I do? Is it safe to still fish with him pestering me? I am afraid to poke him with the gun for a variety of reasons, but mainly I don't want him to bite back. If I get a fish, am I in danger being bit or of the seal trying to take it from me? Any suggestions on tackling this pesky seal problem would be appreciated. - DefiantEwok Last edited by DefiantEwok; 03-02-2015 at 11:21 AM. |

Re: Seal problems
They will steal your fish when they act like that , and they will bite if you turn your back on them . The best thing to do is give them a good poke with your gun , not in the face or hard enuff to go in far , but enuff to send the message . Poke as they turn away from you , if you poke as they are headed at you they will sometimes impale themselves on your gun and you will loose your shaft

Re: Seal problems
I was diving Stillwater south about this time of year awhile back. As I was hauling my yak down to the water, a guy told me some spearos had been nipped the previous day. He said the seals were pupping this time of year and very protective/aggressive.
Everywhere I paddled, there were multiple seals all around me, harassing the heck out of me. Finally gave up trying to spear anything. Ron. |

Re: Seal problems
The seals around monterey are use to divers. Between the scuba divers feeding them h/l guys chumming the water and the spearos who lose fish the seals have learned that being around people means easy meals. In my experience if you don't have fish strung up on your person they will more or less not bother you. Once you have shot fish they will try anything to get it. Either toss fish in your dive platform or bring them back to shore. Each seal is different but harbor seal are more curious and playful while the sea lions are aggressive and territorial. I'll fish around harbors but once the lions find me I move to another spot
