Advice on how to clean up found anchors

Does anyone know of any tricks on how to clean up anchors found diving? Besides the old hammer and chisel/wire brush.

White vinagar. Let it sit for several hrs to overnight depending on the crustation. On an aluminum anchor don't bother to cut it with water, other metallic objects white vinagar needs to be used in specific ways as to not ruin them.

Its galvanized steel. I got most of the barnacles off with a chisel but there is still a residual layer of stuff I can get off completely.

So vinegar will do the trick? What about something like draino?

100 % white vinegar.... Go to Price Right and buy a couple gallons for $1.25 each.

Here is an aluminum fly reel that spent several years on the bottom of the ocean in 51 feet of water before I found it 2 weeks ago.

Your steel will get close enough. The white vinegar will draw the salt out of it and the verdigris. You can neutralize the white vinegar (acid) with a hot soap and water bath after . This will stop the corrosion from keep manifesting because if the vinegar is still on it it will keep working its magic. Then just a cold water rinse.... Easy peasy

why waste your time?
we see them(multiple) all the time in shallow water. They are worthless to sell, because they cost too much to ship. Want it for youself, pressure wash it.

I dont know if you have ever tried pressure washing something that has been covered in sea life for a while. I would not define the result as 'clean'.

In the past I had done some work on barges (aluminum hull). Part of it required removing the sea life from the the bottom every year, as they did not use anti-fowl, only epoxy. Cleaning these hulls required first initially scaping basically with a giant 15lb paint scraper, then following with high power pressure washers. The result was not a paintable surface, nor was it remotely clean. Sometimes they were sent to a blasting bay, but more often they had to be hand sanded with power tools.

It sounds like white vinigar works great, but I haven't tried it persoanlly. If that doesnt give you results you like and you want to make it look new or have a paintable surface I would say scrape, pressurewash, sand to clean metal. Then again, a dirty anchor holds just as well as a clean one as far as I know.

That is what craigslist is for. Also keep them as spares for myself.

Seriously. I am sure if Keysdiver were to advertise that he finds 'multiple anchors all of the time', he would get a great deal of interest in his local area, an would likely have people offering enough money for them to make it worth his time tossing them on the boat on the way home. At least I know I would. Anchors we have found in the past immediately found a new home. I find it hard to believe there are just boneyards of anchors that nobody cares about because there are just so many of them laying around.
