Project boat help

A friend of mine recently bought a boat for $500. 1984 20-ish foot Searay cutty. Obviously for $500, it needs a lot of work. We need to put a new floor, seats, gelcoat repair, GPS install, radio install, new seat pads for the cutty, etc.

We're in south Florida. Is there a boat "junk yard" we could buy some of these items used? Obviously, we know how to use craigslist and Ebay, but going and looking through some old boats would be nice.

The hull is oxidized. Can we just buff starting with 1500 grit going to 3000? Or should we start with sanding... 600 grit and work our way up?

If you know of anyone selling the following items... let me know:

1. Captains chairs
2. Anchor setup... rope, chain, and anchor
3. Radio, antenna's
4. GPS and Depth finder
5. Wood for decking.
6. Life jackets
7. Any old seat padding that might be in usable shape.

Let me know what else you might have...

Thanks!

Re: Project boat help

Check the classified section at thehulltruth.com. You may find some of those things.

Start with rubbing compound, instead of sanding.

Most divers have quite an anchor collection, one should pop up here for you. Don't scrimp on ground tackle. Be sure to have a good anchor with adequate chain and rode.

There's a large used marine parts store in Fort Pierce. http://www.themarineconnection.net/

Other than Sailorman on SR84, you can try calling Surplus Unlimited up in Daytona. They have a great selection of new and used stuff, and their prices are very competitive. They carry everything from stainless hardware to rub rails and electronics. Theyre on Int'l Speedway Dr east of the speedway. Hope this helps..

Try Daytona boat salvage.

Re: Project boat help

You lost me at "needs a new floor". Before you spend anything on that boat I would do a lot of research on a floor installation. You may be out of money and patience with this one step.

Take a look at classicseacraft.com. There is a ton of information about rebuilds. You could easily have 10K in that boat and a ton of work before it sees the water and when you're finished it wont be worth what you've got into it. If it were me I'd find something else.
