Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Huntable vis at 12:01, found some bugs but all were holed up and couldn't see the bottom so it was a lot of effort. 3 legal for me, 4 between 3 other guys. Beautiful stars out and a fun opening night despite difficult conditions.

Tried to hit it this am at the high tide and the conditions got a lot worse. 4ft at the surface and worse on the bottom. Wind+NW windswell building as we were out.

All dives in town...

PS--DFG was driving around to all the spots last night. Make sure you have your cards and legal bugs on you!

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Hi everyone, im not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i came down to santa barbara for the lobster opener and will be here until Wednesday looking for bugs. Most of the bug diving iv done has been in santa monica, san clemente, and sandiego, but iv never dove santa barbara before. Yesterday i made two dives at rafugio and again at mesa lane. I saw a lot of bugs but everything was small. I did see a few nicer ones but they were too deep in there cracks to reach. I was gonna try again today at mesa lane but by the time i got there it was blown out so iv now wasted another day. Im camping at el capitan until wednesday and hoping for some good marine weather and legal sized bugs to occur before i have to go back to work. Any tips or pointers would be extremely appritiated. Thank you

Greg

Wind is howling tonight on The Mesa. Probably not a good sign...

I too went out the morning after the opener. Found some decent conditions but was surprised at the lack of legals. The water was super warm. Didn't do too good, nor did most people I talked too. Hope this isn't an indicator for how the season will go.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

I wouldn't get your hopes up for this weekend, either...

(from John C. Lindsey's weather blog):

Storm activity off the Pacific Northwest will produce a 5-
to 7-foot northwesterly (310-degree, deep-water) sea and
swell (with a 5- to 11-second period) along San Luis Obispo
County's coastline Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning,
further building to 6 to 8 feet (with a 5- to 12-second
period) Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Rough indeed!

This northwesterly sea and swell will decrease to 4 to 6 feet
(with a 7- to 11-second period) Friday and remain at this
height and period through next Monday.

Sounds like more turd soup in the plan...

Got 1 bug at Midnight opener, 2 more saturday night. My buddies both struck out.
Fish and game checked us on the way out out of the water...They were very polite, brief, and did a good job.

Welcome to diving coastal Santa Barbara where the commercial industry has absolutely stripped the area of anything over legal.

The vast majority of any legal bugs you'll find will be one molt over legal cause they were short last year and have only become legal-sized recently.

Oh - and don't forget that the California spiny lobster resource is predominantly shipped to China so your local lobster harvester can make top dollar at the market....

Nice 25+ pound goat from Friday morning. Fun, huntable conditions. Also saw some bonito. Seems like theres a lot less kelp then there normally is? I dont normally dive SB.
