Get a reel or floatline for starters so you don't hurt yourself.

Oh and be verrrrry quiet.

Absolutely delicious! I didn't get a full size cow, which I was kind of bummed because I wanted to get more meat, but the yearlings taste so much better. I've actually thought about grilling it all up and eating it in one sitting. Haha. Now I definitely have to go back next year, trip is already planned.

Re: hoping for a WSB for the new year.

The serious answer to your question is

Spend as much time in the water as possible .

be as quiet as possible .

don't shoot anything but wsb if you want a wsb , if you are making a bunch of noise shooting reef fish , you will never even see a wsb .

They really aren't very hard to get , if you just floated in the kelp without moving for a couple hours , odds are one would swim right under you and you could shoot it without even diving

Finally an answer by someone who remembers what it was like to be new to this sport, thanks Phil.

Re: hoping for a WSB for the new year.

Best advice is be where the fish are.
Sounds stupid, but finding where they are is the hardest part.

Re: hoping for a WSB for the new year.

1. Time in the water
2. More time in the water
3. Even more time in the water

Oh yeah it also helps to be as quiet as possible, don't shoot anything else if you're targeting wsb, develop a tight network of buddies to know where the fish are. But this all means nothing if you don't put enough countless hours of floating in the cold, deep murky kelp bed.

I don't know Phil, I usually see them after I'm tired of just floating in the kelp and decide to shoot a calico. They swim up, hang out while I'm straightening out the shooting line and bail just before the last band is loaded.

Yellowtail taste better anyway
