Where can I get gun blanks
Does anyone make blanks or know someone who's got a blank or two sitting around doing nothing? I'm currently in a place where I don't have any access to tools to make blanks of my own. I'm meeting up with some friends in June to make some guns, but they were too slow on the Neptonics blank offer. Now, I'm trying to track any sort of blank down. I'm looking for preferably teak in lengths longer than 48" and less than 65".

Re: Where can I get gun blanks
No, Wood guy is different. Mike N is also a builder. Really nice blanks on his guns. Normally a mix of wood types. If you want a basic teak blank, you can definitely make one easily. If you don't have the planer, maybe a wood shop can help you out for a good price. Just clamps, epoxy, filler and wood - clamp to a straight edge. leave for a week. Make sure grain patters are opposite. Did I forget anything?

Those blanks look good enough to give them a try for sure.

Re: Where can I get gun blanks
The blanks are "Plantation" teak, as you can see by all the sap wood (light colored parts of the lams). Nothing wrong with a blank made from Plantation teak, I used it when I first started making blanks, but I cut out the sapwood because it often was softer and had a texture that made it hard to sand. Plantation teak runs about $10/ board foot compared to about $25-$28/ board foot for old growth teak. I moved on to old growth teak because by the time I cut out all the sapwood I wasted about half of the wood, so at $20/ board foot I just went with old growth, which is much more consistent with straighter grain and fewer knots. Long story short, if this is going to be a learning build with your buds, go with the cheap blank. If the gun is going to be a one-of-a-kind, custom work of art, go with old growth or some other wood. I've built lots of blanks with Plantation teak, and they came out fine, but I was hand selecting the pieces to make the lams to make the blanks.
The blanks are also made from 2-3 lams. Personal preference, but I prefer more lams to allow neutralizing the internal forces that cause bending and warping. If you do decide to go with these blanks, I suggest buying a little oversized to allow straightening, if required. |
