"I think we need a Bigger Boat!"

June 17th, 2017...couple of divers went on out to the 14 Mile Bank off Newport Beach, after running across empty inshore paddies with no yellowtail....They found more action than they bargained for...As they were getting ready to jump in, a great white came up along side their 16' Whaler....they were able to get some nice underwater shots (not while in the water).....The fish was bigger than the Whaler and was estimated to be about 18' in length....A shark that size would probably weigh around 3,000 pounds...

Moral: When in the ocean, "walk soft and carry a big stick".....Teddy Roosevelt

Re: "I think we need a Bigger Boat!"

there sure has been a lot of shark action this season. definitely seems more than what I remember throughout the past. saw my first GWS from the boat about a month ago. nothing big like that, but about 8' or so... 7-9 miles west of Pt. Loma.

An interesting thing your brain picks up on as a big one is sliding in on you...Even with their mouth closed, you can still see big pearly white teeth....

This is why all of my bluewater guns are loaded with a stainless steel heat-treated five-foot 3/8" shaft.

When in the ocean, I intend to be the wolf; not the porkchop............

I was surfing at the dog beach in Huntington on June 18 and saw a really BIG triangular fin surface outside the break for just about 5 seconds. Maybe this big girl came in to check out the pups.

Re: "I think we need a Bigger Boat!"

I had a blue aggressively come after me one time off shore. I was able to hit it twice (as hard as I could) in the nose with my gun stock. Had it been an 18 foot White, I think I would have been his for the taking. Might be hard to stop a 3000 lber with a gun stock.

Re: "I think we need a Bigger Boat!"

Several divers have survived attacks by large whites...Harry Ingram of the Neptunes shot a 15' plus in the face as it came straight up at him at Guadalupe Island...a South African diver killed a big one with a shot thru the head...etc. the trick is to have a gameplan and move fast.....mine is to shoot the fish and cram my gun sideways in it's mouth...the gun might end up as small toothpicks, but, it could prevent the shark from getting a good hold on me...of course, at my age, I would probably succumb to a heart attack.....

Battles are never won by just assuming you are done for....(unless you are General Custer at the Bighorn)
