Yamaha 250 4 stroke power ????? 23ft Dusky
I'm rebuilding and repowering my Dusky 233 this winter. I had a 2000 Merc 250 EFI before, and with 4 divers, 12 tanks, gear ect, loaded, it did pretty good. I could feel the weight getting on plane, but wasn't terrible. I'm putting in a bigger fuel tank, about 30 more gallons, and I'm adding two more stringers and beefing it up, so there will be at least 300-400 more pounds more weight to the boat. I've been told that I would loose some power over my 250 EFI? Anyone out there running a 250 Yami on their similar size/weight boat? Like a Grady White.. I don't want to be unhappy with the 4 stroke Yamaha when I'm done. I also heard the Suzuki 250 has a bit more power than the Yamaha.. Any input would help.. How much better would it be with twin Optimax 150's? I really want to stick with 4 strokes if I can, two 4 strokes aren't in the budget..

Ok honestly you the f250 yamaha doesn't make as much power as the merc 250 efi. Its no dog by any means but 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.. especially with the extra weight you plan on adding.

Re: Yamaha 250 4 stroke power ????? 23ft Dusky
I am running a 23 WA Dusky with 2006 Suzy DF 250 4 stroke. Have around 1000 hours and still running strong. I regularly take 4 divers and 12 or so steel 120s out with no problem, although trim tabs are a must and it does sit slightly lower than when I had a 2 stroke. I would recomment you put the batteries towards the center to save some weight in the back. Check with Robert at Precision Marine and talk to him before you make a decision...he is a Suzy dealer. PM me, I can give you my # and we can talk...I just turned another guy on to a DF 250 that has a 23 Dusky center console and they finished up last week. Might be good to contact him as well to see how the new 4 strokes workout on the it since they have more power than mine.

I second the suzukis, they are good running motors, very popular down here in the keys...

I have a 23 SeaCraft Tsunami subjected to the heaviest dive loads you can imagine and my DF 250 Suzuki is more motor than I could ever want. I will second that Rob at Precision is the Man! If I need service I happily drive past more than a dozen Suzy dealer to come to him from Ocala.
Here is a pic of my sled..... 40 knots on a light day.

Re: Yamaha 250 4 stroke power ????? 23ft Dusky
Maybe, especially with a pair of light Etecs but how much faster and at what cost? Don't the Etecs require at least mid grade fuel and I think the oil is pretty pricey too..? They may be more fuel effecient and offset the cost but most all modern 2 and 4 stroke outboards are pretty much neck and neck when it comes to fuel efficency.
I wonder what kind of top and crusing speeds the OP is looking to get? In a 23 ft boat average sea conditions really limit the use of top speed applications unless you are blasting down the channel. The top end for my 23 foot utilitarian express with a tower top is right at 40 knots with an average dive load and 130 gallons of fuel. My comfortable cruise is 24 to 30 knots depending on seas and I can bank on 2 nautical per gallon for fuel overall. Last Saturday I took this shot of my plotter when I was out configuring and testing the new autopilot Santa dropped off last week. 42 knots ain't too shabby for an eight year old DF250 with nearly 1700 hours on it.

Re: Yamaha 250 4 stroke power ????? 23ft Dusky
I'm not super concerned with top speed. My 250 EFI pushed the boat to 46-48 mph on a flat day.. I never run WO, I get up on plane then back it down to 24-30mph depending on the condition. I just don't want to load the boat with gear and take for ever to plane. With my single I ran a jack plate and trim tabs, always planed out no problem.
