Going to Hawaii?

Looks like my friends and I might end up in Hawaii (oahu or maui is what we are looking at now) during June 22- July 2... We were originally planning on going to the keys for those dates, but then discovered flights and places to stay for a little over a thousand which was what it was just going to cost us to stay in the keys. So we are looking into the islands now... any words of advice?

Re: Going to Hawaii?

Yea, that would be great. I guess you have to be 25 to rent a car in hawaii...so having someone to help us get someplace other than immediately around wherever we are staying would be great. We are planning on mainly shore diving, hunting no deeper than 60 feet. Two of the guys I am with probably wont be able to shoot a fish past 40'. So if you are into diving with some fairly green people...thatd be cool.

Re: Going to Hawaii?

Im another guy going on the trip and it might be for end of june but most likely from July 23rd to August 1st... What side of Maui do locals consider best for diving? Spearfishing? Half the reason i want to go to hawaii is for the diving and scenery.

Re: Going to Hawaii?

go to kauai island is smaller not over crowded better grounds to dive alot of places on maui is not accesible ,private lands. other hand kauai is not over crowded very easy to go around ,about hour and a half from one side to another, there's alot of grounds to dive. it's going to be summer so northshore will be the best bet. I'm a native kauaian dive the hold island and everyone that dives there nows me ,probably can tell da boys and help out with gas and dive with boat because there's alot of awesome grounds to cover. darin agan

Re: Going to Hawaii?

Did the Big Island over Easter and stayed a bit up island from Kona. In a word AWESOME! The only problem was that I dove only one day with Calvin Lai and his father on an offshore freedive charter. Twenty minutes to the first FAD and purple water not too much further at the next FAD. Tons of fish life and the shore diving possibilities are endless as the drop off in many places is very close to shore. I have a couple of contacts so pm me if you need numbers. Have a great time wherever you go. Be safe out there. Tommy T

Re: Going to Hawaii?

Were there a lot of fish in 30 feet of water? I dont know if us guys could go much deeper and still have a breathe hold. And is there any private locations along that shore or is it pretty muh open to public? How was the structure?

Re: Going to Hawaii?

Now we are looking again for a cheap good place to stay...maui, kona, or the big island...close to good shore diving. 30-40 Feet max basically.

Other than that, any advice on what we should bring to shoot with? Im planning on bringing a 120cm RA, with a monofil reel, but I might invest in a good polespear to bring too.

Re: Going to Hawaii?

For example, staying on the west side of the big island would be possible...but what is the diving like? Kailua Kona area?

During July 23-July 31st what will the conditions be like on western hawaii? Is it shore diveable? Fish within 40ft? If the answer is yes to these then I am booking flights and hotel probably this weekend.

Re: Going to Hawaii?

I was born and raised in Kona and will be back there in July-August. The diving along the Kona coast is good but like most locations it hit or miss depending on the specific location that you choose to dive. Most fish will require some skill and a decent breath hold to spear. There is lots of 30' diving all along the coast but a lot of the real quality fish are going to be a little deeper. PM me if you need more info... Tobin
