Smooth tail spiny lobster

My brother caught this today in Hollywood. Pretty cool. I've never seen one before. We thought it was a mutant Spanish at first because of the spots on the end of the tail. Anybody else ever see these around Hollywood miami area? Found this description of it attached. "Smooth tail spiny lobster" he felt bad he kept it after we read how rare they were. He said he would have released it.

Re: Smooth tail spiny lobster

Thank you for posting these pictures. I have not caught a smooth tail spiny lobster yet but have caught at least 3 species of lobsters while beach diving in South Florida.

Thanks for posting that thread. I'm going to use that as a reference now. Is the information on harvesting Spanish lobster still valid

Yes, but I'm not a lawyer so check yourself with FWC. Spiny lobster are the only ones that are regulated in Florida. I don't recommend shooting the other lobster species as you can't easily confirm if they have eggs. But yeah, I understand that there's still no closed season and no limits except the normal 100 lbs default limit.

From what this says...its not specific to any species. Just lobster in general are prohibited from spearing

That article is ambiguously worded. The law says that "Spiny Lobster" shall not be harvested by any device that could puncture the shell. That doesn't apply to the other lobster species.

From https://www.flrules.org/gateway/read...ile=68B-24.doc
Quote:
(10) No person shall harvest or attempt to harvest spiny lobster using any device which will or could puncture, penetrate, or crush the exoskeleton (shell) or the flesh of the lobster, and the use of such devices as part of, or in conjunction with, any trap is also prohibited.
But I still think you SHOULDN'T shoot other lobster!!! I just don't think it's ILLEGAL to shoot lobster species other than spiny.
