Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
Hello, I am currently building my first gun and am having a hard time with the bands. The shaft I am using is a 7mm by 130cm maverick america for a 90cm pipe gun. This is a heavier shaft then I am use to using on my other guns. I have both 14.5mm small id and 16mm small id bands in bulk. What would be the recommended band/ band stretch for that shaft size for speed and accuracy? Thanks

I would make two sets. One of each size 14.5 and 16 try them both.

Can’t really help with band length but sounds like a fun build. Post some pics if you get a chance

Re: Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
I was planning on doing that. I'm hoping to get some suggestions so I don't waste a bunch of band material. I'm putting a meandros x4 open muzzle on so it is easy to change bands from single to double or even just change thickness of the bands. Before, I just used regular single 16mm or 18mm bands. I have never used the small ID bands to know how they perform.

Use 2 14.5 bands at 3.5 stretch to start or 1 16mm band at 3.4 stretch maximum.

Re: Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
2 x 14mm small ID bands at 360% with a 7mm shaft. If using 7.5mm or 8mm go for 2 x 14.5mm small ID at 380%. The band cut figures are general and it is always better to be conservative and add a little extra and then cut one side of the band shorter if you feel that loading is too easy. Bands will stretch out after about 20 or 30 shots ... so have to keep that in mind. Another idea is to keep your wishbones longer and then just cut the wishbone shorter as the bands stretch out. I calculate cut length as the distance from band hole to shark fin and then multiply by 2 and then divide by 3.6 for 360%. I don't add the length of wishbone or add extra for the turn around the band hole.

Re: Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
So how would a single 16mm small id band at 350% stretch equate to two 14mm small id bands?

Simple, clean sight picture, low recoil, but less power. The lesser power is nice and sufficient if you use a 6.5mm shaft. With the 7mm shaft it'll work but with less range than 2 14mm bands.

Re: Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
Thanks for all the feedback. I received the remaining parts, including the barrel, from Australia today. Most of this gun design was hi jacked from an older thread on here where he used the same barrel http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=193371 but in a 120cm. His has the rail the complete length of the barrel. Mine does not. So my question now is which side do I put the handle based on the picture to give the shaft maximum support during the release?

Personally, I shoot a 90 cm gun most of the time here in the Gulf of Mexico. I rig with 2 x 14 mm bands at 350% and a 7.0 mm shaft. This set up is super accurate and good for 90% of the fish we hunt. I am under powered sometimes and wish I was using a 110 but the 90 is a better all around hunting inside holes and wrecks. Using a smaller gun also helps you to become a better hunter by learning to get closer to your target and not taking Hail Marry shots. Stalking and hunting and learning your fish is the key weather you are diving is low vis hunting bottom fish or unlimited vis hunting pelagics.

I would go this way. Maybe with 3x stretch to start. You can always cut an inch or two if you feel underpowered. Keep in mind that the more stretch, the more recoil, which means less accurancy. 7 mm x 125-130 shaft is the way to go.

Re: Band choice/stretch for 90cm pipe gun?
Alright I finished the gun, but have not had a chance to take it for a spin. I decided I didn't want it as a open muzzle so 3D printed a piece to close it and they came out pretty nice.
