Thumbs down Divers Direct in Orlando??

Store in Orlando closed without warning today. Employees given pink slips and told to go home. They had some really friendly employees. Apparently most of their other stores are following suit. Moving Nitrox fill stuff to Key Largo location for now.

Yep Confirmed !

And they own that 3 year old new building. Some good people worked at that store, Mike and others will be missed.

That's pretty crazy. I hope the one in North Palm Beach doesn't go the same way. They have some pretty good deals in there.
Definitely not a great time for businesses with low profit margins and high overhead.

Tough time to be in business, no doubt. Low profit margins? Not too sure about that since dealer mark up on most dive gear is 100%....

It happens to be a tough time for any business catering to the non essentials.

Not surprised honestly... Knew something odd was up with Diver's Direct because the one in Fort Lauderdale is terribly understaffed.

Agree, I'm in a 3 month slump. I tried to order 3/4 farmer john suit last week online from them, told only 3-5-5 to make 3/4. They had them in past because I bought them. Got one elsewhere. Could be bad sign for them.

Re: Divers Direct in Orlando??

i remember going to the orlando store when i was just getting started diving. we were lookin at the guns and this older black guy came to help us out. i cant remember his name. he was cool as hell and super helpful. the funiest thing he said was about this really petit, super cute girl that freedive spearfishes. he said somethin about nailing her to a matress. he was way older than us and we were a bunch of teenagers so we were rollin.
that is sad to here. wish all the employees luck finding work.

Re: Divers Direct in Orlando??

There are going to be a lot of this in the next year not just dive shops but all type of shops. I had one of my dealers close after Christmas he call up the man who owned the building and told him the keys were on the counter and walked away. That cost me 3 grand. Dominos One guy fall and he effects 6 around him for one or two of them can't recover and they fall taking others with them.

Re: Divers Direct in Orlando??

These sort of happenings have ripple effects as Dave mentions above. I have not spoken with DD management, but I am sure lots of dive retailers are feeling the pinch. Think about all the suppliers and manufacturers that are hurt by dive store closings or just plain poor performance. It all starts with less people shopping and buying due to economic stress or lack of confidence. A local restaurant called Shells that I ate at a few times a week suddenly closed a few months ago to our great surprise. Retailers of all kinds are being pummellled nowadays.

Hi Bulit7,
That 100% mark up is a thing of the past.
A lot of the manufacturers have dropped the suggested retail prices, if not on all their products, then on some of their lines.
The squeeze is on, right from the manufacturing level.
Regards,
Mike.

Arrow Re: Divers Direct in Orlando??

Guys, here below is a message from the CEO of Divers Direct Kevin Senecal which he asked me to post on this thread to help clarify the situation.

Quote:
All of us at Divers Direct appreciate the interest that the Speros on Spearboard are showing in Divers Direct. The current economic conditions have required us to carefully review all of our operations to ensure that we remain a viable business for the long term. As a result we closed our stores in Orlando and Florida City and substantially reduced our corporate staffing. We are still operating www.diversdirect.com and stores in Palm Beach Gardens, Dania Beach, Key Largo, and Key West.

Changes like this are very challenging and they do result in good people losing their jobs. To ease the transition for our affected associates, we have offered severance or different positions in the organization to all of these folks.

If any one has a customer service issue or questions related to these changes, please call 800-DIVE-USA or send an email to experts@diversdirect.com or email me directly at kevin@diversdirect.com

Thanks again for your interest in Divers Direct.

PS... We still plan to be a major sponsor for Spearboard Tournaments!!!"

Kevin, thanks for the update. Being a business person, I understand and see how the state of the economy is affecting almost all industries. I wish you and your company the best, Tony (Oh and ..... I think Spearboard members will really like that PS above)

Re: Divers Direct in Orlando??

Pretty amazing that they are closing two very large facilities (for the dive retailer world) and vow to continue to support spearfisherman by continuing to make donations.
