Trip Report Monterey/Moss Landing

Robert (Smash) and I went out and hunted Moss landing. The water was pretty warm, got 63 on the surface, 56 at around 50 feet. On the bottom we had about 20' viz and great diving conditions. The halibut are in feeding on squid. We took 5 nice size flatties and a couple lings. Time to start checking beach location or sand channels. Great day of diving !!! Sad day because when we finished I sold my boat.

Very nice Bob,
Sad to hear about your boat but I'm sure your replacement will be even better.
Glad you found the halibut.

Do the flatties come in really close this time of year in Monterey, like 10'-30' range, or do they stay further out in the 50+ depths?

Yes this time of year you can find them in the sand in anywhere from 5' of water to much deeper. We got our in 40' to 50'.

Re: Trip Report Monterey/Moss Landing

Isn't Moss landing just sand? I was up there during Feb. on a surf trip and it is by far the heaviest beach break I've ever surfed. I figured there might be some diving near the jetty but I was preoccupied with surviving vertical drops down double overhead faces.

there is a spot , it used to be epic back when it was a secret spot ,i have seen halis stacked up like fish scales . now it is ok but it gets hit supper hard all season long ,by h&l and divers .
