Yeah I had the same thought about muzzle hoops. That would definitely accomplish the goal for the kid's gun, I just haven't seen any nice looking muzzle hoops in my opinion. I guess it always makes me think old school JBL/AB Billers which are pretty clunky in my opinion. Functional but kind of ugly.

What about something like the ermes sub stopper tube

I don't think it would hold the shaft completely like a muzzle hoop but I wonder if there's something similar that looks nice and holds the shaft.

Unless you are shooting from an upside down position gravity keeps the shaft in the gun's open track, the muzzle hoop just keeps the spear from falling off the gun when it is being held at other than a ready to shoot position. The band tension keeps the back end down. Take it from someone who has spent (collectively) years underwater and blown away countless fish with many "old skool" weapons which were then the latest thing.
