Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

What a day on the water.. My brother and his wife were spending their honeymoon on the coast and his wife recently got certified so she could start joining our spearing trips. We chose Friday as the best weather day for her first dive and left the marina at 6:00 with five spearos aboard my uncles boat the impulsive. She had a safe first dive but her wet suit was to large and she got pretty cold in the 71 degree water and only made one dive. The rest of us worked the bugs, Hogs and grouper over pretty good in depths ranging from 60-75 ft. Vis was around 40 ft and current was very light. We all made 2 dives and were back at the dock by 4:00pm.

Total for the day was 5 bugs, 3 gag grouper up to 30 lbs, 1 red grouper 15 lbs and 4 hogs.

Awesome day can't wait to do it again.

Can't seem to upload pictures all my file sizes are too large, any suggestions..

My camera takes big file sizes too so I have the same problem. I always have to open them in MS Office Picture Manager, click resize and drop them down by 50% to get them small enough to upload.

Nice work Fletcher.

Can't wait to get back in the water.

Caught 35 Dolphin this weekend and was bored to death after about 15 of them.

Re: Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

Guys Fletch asked me to post pics from our trip this past Friday and there are some good ones. I think he might be sorry he gave me his info to post. For those of you that do not know him Fletch is the bearded fellow in the rainbow towel!!

It was an awesome day and he even cooked my bride and I blackened hogfish tacos for dinner and cleaned the fish. Make sure you request the honeymoon treatment when you go diving with him.

More pic's to follow

Congrats on the trip. Nice haul there. Pretty good for some shallow diving.

Re: Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

Good haul lads... but someone had to bring this up so it might as well be me.

The red circle shows a Hog that should still be swimming. Period.

The white circles I'm curious of the species. Hopefully sea bass or tautog, not gag or scamp.

In these times of regulation changes we not only have to be careful what pics we post but also to be part of the solution, not contributing to the problem in debate.

Yell at me if you want, but I'm not trying to be a jerk, just looking out for the backyard.

Re: Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

Gutt,

Thanks for looking out. The circled fish above were tasty black bass that were shot at the end of dives due to no larger critters running around. Very good on the grill and pretty nice black bass. I am with you on the hog, we are not perfect and fish seem to look much larger when you have not been wet in almost a year. We try to be very careful in what we harvest on land (check all the green in avatar) and sea and hope to be doing it 50 years from now. No offense taken, good luck this summer

Cool man, I've been guilty of 'boat shrinkage' just like anyone else... thanks for the clarification and fair seas to you and your crew!

Re: Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

H20,

Good talking with you lately and I am pumped to get down south and see what lives beneath the free-dive zone. I have been talking to Fletch and his schedule is pretty busy but once you figure out what works for you let me know and I will pass it along to him. Fletch would ride down from Myrtle with all of our dive gear and dad and I would come down from Chatt.

I am thinking either June 7-8 or 14-15 would work and the Cobes should still be thick. Let me know what works and looking forward to it.

Are you planning on getting scuba certified this summer?

Claytor, Fletcher, JT

Re: Southern NC Dive Report Friday May 2

Good luck offshore, i will look forward to the report. It sucks being landlocked 6 hours from the coast. When you hear back from your man with the boat let me know so I can pass the dates along to Fletch. If it works for you guys the 14-15 of June looks pretty wide open for all of us. Shoot em up and I am pumped to see what kind of damage we can do free divin and scuba. Talk to you.
