Re: Frying Pan Shoals (pics)

Frying Pan Tower was purchased from the government by a private investor a couple of years back at auction. I believe the investor is in the process of turning it into a B&B of sorts.

Can someone explain to me what this tower is like? It is privately owned and is X miles offshore? Does it have some oceanographic navigational or commercial function? Do people live on it full time? Sorry, I have so many questions, but it looks like something out of the Waterworld movie... Certainly it is unusual.. are there other towers like this elsewhere?

The tower was used to warn ship traffic of the shoals. There are 3 towers. One off Cape Henry VA the Chesapeake Light tower, one off the Hatteras NC area marking the Diamond Shoals and this one about 30 miles off South Port NC. Frying Pan Tower is the biggest and in the best condition.

The tower is huge inside! Its got everything, Bedrooms, bathrooms, hot showers, big kitchen, giant living room, pool table...... Just make sure your buddies not diving underneath it when you flush the toilet The roof is the coolest tho, its a giant helicopter pad and a great place to play corn hole if the winds not too strong. Staying in the tower felt like an episode of Lost, I kept looking to see if the Dharma logo was on anything

Sorry about the pic size, I am having trouble resizing some of them..??

I had a maintenance crew on Chesapeake for a few days during the First Gulf War. They were about in the middle of their stay when the Seals from Little Creek decided to use it for a practice assault on a platform in the Persian Gulf at 0 dark thirty in the morning. We didn't know they were coming, and they didn't know we were there. It got right interesting for a while, at least for the minute and a half it took the team to "secure" the light. Within a half hour all players had been identified, apologies passed around and injuries to our crew treated. For some odd reason the Seal Team didn't take any injuries...

A bit later we heard on the news a team had captured an Iraqui outpost on an oil platform. We had a pretty good idea who was involved.

The platforms are comfortable when properly set up and supplied. OTOH the only 2 SAR calls to rescue an NDBC crew during my tenure were to pull us off Chesapeake. One was to pull a USCG Lt Commander and myself off the light when a Jan blue norther arrived way early. The light was winterized with no supplies and no fuel on board except to run the light & radio beacon source. Staying was not a survivable option. We couldn't get off by ship so we were extracted into a large helicopter hovering off the pad. Jumping free off the pad into the open door of a chopper 100' above the sea was an experience I'd like to avoid in the future. The other SAR involved a chopper crash that dumped the whole bird into the water. Our team was rescued, but both the USCG pilots died when the platform leg went through the windscreen on the way down.

I seriously can't wait to make a trip back east to go out w/ you guys. It may have to be next summer when I'm not slammed with clinical stuff and boards, but I can't wait to hang out w/ you guys. Next time. This is making me homesick.

Re: Frying Pan Shoals (pics)

I had the plesure to go aboard the tower on one of our first comercial dive trips in the Carolinas on the FV/Reefraider II back in the late 70's. It was automated back then with no one living aboard, it was realy run down and trashy. Realy nice to see someone put so much work into fixing it up. Oh yea, the pool table was there then! Thanks for sharing, Vic
