Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

My New Toy!!!

Call me crazy but I wanted to get a jet ski for my spearfishing adventures.
I bought a 2007 Yamaha FX HO with 25 hours on it. Customized it with a brand new Garmin 541S (works great by the way...some said it couldn't be done.) Covered the entire ski with Hydro Turf for better grip and overall protection.

The big piece for the ski that makes everything possible is the PWC Caddy which holds my guns and all my gear. I customized it to hold spear guns but it can also have fishing pole holders whatever you want. The caddy itself only weighs about 60 lbs but it has enough room to hold all my gear, coolers, fins, wetsuits etc..... Even has a storage unit underneath for a extra fuel tank to switch over to while driving. It is also perfect for scuba divers because it can hold two tanks on the sides.

I have been really happy with my decision. The caddys is great! it is really easy to take on and off. Even with the caddy on the jet ski it performs great i can still get it up to 65 mph.

Any boaters in Rhode Island don't be shocked if you see me fly by!!

Below is a link showing the ski in action. If you guys have any questions feel free to let me know.

Re: Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

that's a really amazing and unique set-up. Where'd ya find that PWC Caddy? Looks like a solid rig for diving. How does it handle with the caddy on the back and the weight being higher than say, a jet ski deck or extractor sled?

It looks so cool! Let me know how it turns out when you hit the water with two persons on it and return to the ramp with a pile of fishes loaded on PWCaddy.

Re: Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

Actually seing that your from San Diego you may actually know the creator of the PWC Caddy. Extractor creates it along with the sleds and tow boards you speak of. http://www.extractorsled.com

When I spearfish I actually have my dive partner on it with me so there is two us. Handling wise it does great I dont notice any difference at all. With the two divers on it and all our gear we have alot of weight on the ski (over 500 lbs) so obviously it takes a little longer to plane off. With just one person on it i dont even realize its there.

As far as stabilty and everything I have't noticed a decrease. I have had no probelms climbing on the side of the skiand than manuevering around to put all my gear away in the caddy. ANother positive is that since the caddy is air tight and it adds surface area to the ski it makes it even harer to roll/flip.

The best part about it the caddy is that relativly easy to take on and off. For me thats important because I can take it off for family and friends to use and still have a super fast/fun jet ski for tubing or whatever.

Re: Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

Thats awesome man! Ive thought about this for years that caddy is sweet!
The spear gun on the rack makes me think of the crazy jet skiers in the movie "waterworld"

I always thought about using some tow-in surfing accessories to make a dive deck.

http://www.highsurfrescue.com/

Ive seen larger decks on surfing videos and they don't look like they hinder performance one bit.

Re: Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

I have been looking for a jet ski for this exact purpose. At first I was looking for a zodiac but I decided I want to get a jet ski because I could be towed inot the waves on my wakeboard. But you just made me want to get a ski even more. What the maintenance like on it? I have heard that Jet Skis break down a lot and take A LOT of maintenance. PLEASE tell me otherwise.

Re: Customized Jet Ski for Spearfishing

jet ski diving is sooooo dang fun it's ridiculous... and way less maintenance/cost than a boat. it's not as comfortable but they go fast and are super fun.

That is pretty interesting. I love small PWC's. There are so many designs out there. I'm actually surprised nobody has come out with that yet. It combines a small RIB with a Jet SKi. Good idea I suppose. I think I'm gonna stay on the market for a jet ski tho, hopfully make something that looks as good and functions as well as Boss1's Ski. Looks awesome dude!
