Re: Islamorada report 6/22
Crocker always seems to be a good dive without many fish.

Crocker and Davis are usually picked over from my experience. How was the wind/waves by the way? Also what's the size limit on warsaw?

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
Doubt it was a warsaw because they are almost always in deep water. If it was a red, black or gag which it was probably one of those, then it was too short. You should probably get a fish chart or something with pictures and sizes and bring it with you on the boat. Having a short grouper is a big fine from FWC.

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
We did have a chart/ fish i.d. and regulation chart with us as well as measuring devices. We were certain it was a warsaw grouper which does not have a size limit...

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
It was a black grouper. It was short. Mayyyyybe it was a scamp. Still short. Warsaws are rare for the keys and are veery deep.

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
I had to reread that again "a 17in grouper".. even tho the warsaw dont have a size limit i dont even shoot hog till they are about that size. If its the only fish out there then i guess i understand, but still its a bit small.

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
Definitely wasn't a warsaw. There aren't warsaws on the reef in the Keys. They are all very deep.

Re: Islamorada report 6/22
If it was a warsaw, a 17" specimen must be a record (small). Your possible warsaw probably made a great fish sandwich but most taken can feed a school bus of starving large kids. As a beginner, be sure to know the difference between fish... blacks and warsaws look very similar but have unique regulations. Keep the reports coming though!
