Storing wetsuits
How do you guys store your open cell suits, I have always stored mine on a clothes hanger with towel wrapped around the close hanger and hung them?
Just bought a new suit and wondering if I should just leave this one in a pile kinda? Thoughts |

Re: Storing wetsuits
Sorry, cloths hangers are BAD! Even padded ones.
Look at the area of contact with the hanger and you will notice a thinning of the material...what you don't notice is the elongation of the ENTIRE suit! The BEST way to store it is; Right side out ( it is going to take a "compression set", so it is best to take the set in the way that your wear it) Lay it flat, possibly under your bed. ( this is the BEST WAY to store the suit) The worst things are to; fold it..and Stick it in a dive bag... lay ANYTHING on top of it... Store it on a hanger.. store it near electric motors ( ionized molecules are killers of neoprene) Store in near anything that burns natural gas.. Store it in heat... store it in sunlight... |

Re: Storing wetsuits
Look at , say, the arm of your suit. From the camo/nylon side, it should look smooth to the eye. Now turn the arm inside out ( skin out) and look at where it was the most folded. You will see lots of small "crevices" that is compression. If you were to cut the arm off of a 7 mil suit, at the natural "folded areas", both of them, you would see the thickness is reduced considerably, that is the compression set. There is little you can do to help that but something you can do not to make it worse, and that is to store your suit right side out so as to not double up on the compression set.
The only problem you may encounter with storing it right side out ( nylon out) is the fusing of the skin to the skin. This should not be an issue if the suit is completely dry and clean when you store it. If you are concerned you can put something inside between the skin surfaces, toweling, newspaper, tissue, etc. It shouldn't be necessary though. |

Re: Storing wetsuits
Now...ask me how I store MY SUITS!
CERTAINLY NOT hanging on a hanger! I fold them neatly and stuff them ON TOP off all my dive gear in my dive bag! Is it as good as laying flat under my bed? NO WAY! Do I care? NOPE! It's Good enough. |

Re: Storing wetsuits
You guys are doing it all wrong. Best way is to buy the suit, put it on and don't take it off until it is time to replace it (along with full body skin draft). How you deal with nature calls, is up to you, no need to share that information.
That said, I store my suits folded in half inside a gear plastic BOX, (on top of everthing else). The drying takes place in a wide print hanger, the kind you use for suits and so (24-48h at most). If you want to avoid the bare neoprene sticking to itself, you can always sprinkle some talk powder inside and shake it arround before folding/storing. Mikel |

Re: Storing wetsuits
I have them hanging in a closet inside-out. Maybe they will compress, but at least they won't stink!
