Even hard pack sand can stop a tip short if shot straight down. (very important). You will get lucky sometime and find them out on top of the sand, but even then you have to be quick with the shot cause they seem to bolt much faster if not covererd up. good luck and slow down!!!!

Amazing haul man. This is great advice. Also, I like to overweight myself when targeting hali's. There so often in shallow that it helps to slow down and reduce fin kicks and movement underwater. This equates to fewer spooked fish. I try to make myself neutral at 6'-8ft depth. Don't neglect the flat reef or reef in general. Iv'e shot many right on the reef. When I approach a good area, I envision that a halibut is right in the spot, every spot. This really seems to make them pop out when they're actually there.

Probably the best halibut advice I've ever gotten. Only had a few hali dives since, but instead of getting lucky and maybe running into a fish I've seen a few fish clearly and had time to set up and size up the fish. Of course all fish were short . Slow down, it really does make a difference.

Great job on the hali's John, lets dive again soon.

Re: Hali hotel

Boy, it sure did'nt take the water long to clear up after that nice littlr swell we had. Dove a couple of times with the vis ranging from hazy 5 inside to up to 20 feet in 15-20 foot of water. Had an awesome time with life everywhere. Schools of zebra perch and massive sargo breezed me constantly and bait seemed to be everywhere I turned. Water temp feels great 66-67 and wind came up later on ( around 3 ) but shut off by 6:30.
Managed 3 flatties with one real quality fish in the morning go out and these fish on the second. The wsb was 35 inches but fought nice! You all should really try to get out in the next few days. I hear a lil swell comes wed. and it's relly nice right now. Oh, I got some badass footage on my go-pro, cant wait to put a vid together!!!
