Gamefish Updates to Know....

...MPA Bill #2369 passed with one hundred percent support in both houses of the State Capitol inSacramento...It increases fines, license suspensions and jail time for poachers invading the MPA sites, accidental or not....Effective Jan.1, 2019, it increases penalties from $5,000 and up to $40,000, to $10,000 and up to $50,00; license loss with no transfer of charter boat licenses to another boat to stay in business and up to 1 year of jail time..plus, a misdemeanor on your record...if you don't know where the MPA boundries are located, perhaps, it is time to go by a sporting goods store or F&Wildlife office to get a free copy....This political knee-jerk reaction will cost some sportfishing and private boat captains their licenses even if they make an honest mistake (dragging anchor, faulty gps readings,etc).. if it gets dismissed, it could still cost you thousands in attorney fees to fight back...
...On the positive side, Bill #1017 passed both houses and only needs Gov. Brown's signature...it outlaws drift gill nets (swordfish) which kills a lot of sealife….in place, is a requirement for deep set gear that will protect a lot of surface life such as turtles, sharks, marlin, mola mola, etc...sometimes, they get it right.....we old timers have been writing Sacramento for years to get this thing passed....after my 6th letter, I assumed I would be dead before it ever made it thru that morass....
...NOAA reports that the Pacific Bluefin biomass appears to be improving..In 2016, the count was 3.3 percent, up from 3 percent in 2014...The appearance of larger fish each year bodes well for replenishment, IF we don't catch too many while the fishing is good...
...There are large masses of both, yellowtail and dorado below the border. They appear to be moving this way, indicating we could have a good fall season into winter if the water doesn't upwell and turn cold...Catalina is slow this week with green water and a continuing south swell that goes down both sides of the island, causing cross chop and constant wind...Heading over Friday for 3 days to try again aboard the f/v Balluga....Positive side is if there are no fish, we still have the Art Festival and annual wine tasting fundraiser to endulge in!...
...Not intended to raise undue alarm, but, there are at least 3 reports of great whites biting off the tails of big bluefin behind San Clemente island, as the guys gaff the fish at boatside to pull them aboard..Lots of makos out there..On September 5th, a fisherman on the Toronado hooked a 10' mako which promptly hit high speed, rammed the hull and made a sound big enough to wake everyone in their bunks, thinking there had been a collision....a foot higher and it would have landed on board...Even then, some of those diehard guys wouldn't move to give up their spot at the rail!....Life is Good, especially when you are on dry Deck....

Raise money for a violation? Our politicians? I cannot tell you how many times I have pulled up to unknowing boats fishing in an MLPA and advised them to move. Another money grab by politicians who have to pay off retirement/healthcare promises in order to stay in power. Sad.

In the meantime Santa Monica Pier lobster poachers continue to take lobsters off season despite numerous calls to WeTip and calls to DFW! “DFW; We are spread thin” Santa Monica PD, “there is nothing we can do.”

There should at least be boundery markers on land indicating where the MLPAs begin!

I agree Carrasco! Put some markers up.
But I suspect they want the borders to be difficult to determine....

Re: Gamefish Updates to Know....

Just to clarify, this is only for "a person who holds a commercial fishing license, or is operating a boat or vessel licensed as a commercial passenger fishing boat" and takes or facilitates take.
