New Gun Needed

New to the sport and need a new gun. My buddy has a AB Biller that he likes but open to anything. Let me know if you have a gun you think will work for me. $300 budget. Live in Daytona. Thanks

Rob Allen. The size you need will be determined by the vis and type of hunting. Probably between a 90 and 120.

Re: New Gun Needed

The JBL magnum is a good starter gun and 150 seems fair. I started with that gun last year, but overpowered the bands (replaced with bands meant for the magnum XHD). The gun and shaft are really beefy so it can handle overbanding like that. The shaft is really thick so you need to get good middle shots or preferably head stone shots at close range to prevent tear off. The head shots work a lot better with the overpowered bands. I gave mine to my little brother, but I'll ask if he wants to sell it. Same price as the other one, but with no extra shaft, good overpowered bands, and two extra JBL tips, one being a break away tricut. PM if interested.

Honestly, I'd recommend spending a little more and buying a Mako 90 new. That's what I switched to from the JBL and it's great. It's not as beefy, but it shoots a little better, thinner shaft, so less tear off, and is more maneuverable.

I still stand by the Mako as a better starter gun, but as soon as I found some rides to get me into deep water I got the RA 120. It's a little tougher to load and less maneuverable, but you can tag fish at greater range. I recommend getting both eventually.

If freediving, I recommend:

Hunting < 30ft - Mako 90

Hunting > 30ft - RA 120

Mike at Florida Freedivers is the man to see about RAs. If you buy from him, you never have to worry about breaks or service.

Re: New Gun Needed

if you're diving in less than 50ft, Rob Allen 110. 50ft or more a 120

Re: New Gun Needed

Thanks for the advice! Right now i think im leaning toward a new mako oceanic 110! it doesnt seem to have any neg. reviews and i hunt mostly out of ponce inlet so i have no choice but to hunt deep water. although im down in west palm right now so i plan on stopping by FFD's tomorrow to check out the "Bob Allen"! I think I would be a fan of being able to switch back and forth from free spear, which according to a post on here, the Mako 110 would allow me to do with minor adjustments! Thanks again for the help!
