Tournament is scheduled for October 26-27. Captain's meeting is Oct. 25. There will be 8 available fish for weighing each day: Grouper, Snapper, Hogfish/Flounder, Triggerfish/Spadefish/Sheepshead, African Pompano/Cobia and a Lionfish Rodeo (separate from the aggregate score and based on number of fish rather than poundage.)

Prizes for both scuba and freedive.

INTRODUCTION – The 2012 Murrells Inlet 1st Annual Spearfishing Tournament & Lionfish Rodeo is being hosted by Murrells Inlet 2020, a 501c3 non-profit community revitalization organization dedicated to making the Inlet a nice place to live, work and visit. Murrells Inlet 2020 (MI2020), now entering its 15th year of operation, has championed several major village improvements such as the Marshwalk, Bike Bridge and bike lanes. The group initiated an Inlet Water Quality Monitoring program which is now entering its fourth year and is producing meaningful data to help pinpoint potentially damaging sources of pollution to our saltmarsh. MI2020 has also launched recycling program initiatives, and continues to be involved with many beautification projects including landscaping, signage, and lighting. MI2020 also works to promote Murrells Inlet as a must-see destination. The group relies on donations and fundraising for its continued operation. Proceeds from the 2012 Murrells Inlet 1st Annual
Spearfishing Tournament & Lionfish Rodeo will benefit Murrells Inlet 2020. Your registration fees are tax-deductible as per current IRS regulations. A shooter’s voluntary surrender of fish will also benefit the charity.
The 2012 Murrells Inlet 1st Annual Spearfishing Tournament & Lionfish Rodeo is a great opportunity for shooters to experience the great diving off the Murrells Inlet coast and will also offer an occasion for people who enjoy Spearfishing to assemble together and enjoy each other’s company. In making the rules, we have made every effort to make the tournament as safe as possible. The website for registration information is www.murrellsinletsc.com (Events page).

TOURNAMENT DATES AND LOCATION – A Captain’s Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 25th, 2012 between the hours of 7:00PM and 8:00PM at The Inlet Sports Lodge, 6600 Highway 17 Business. Tournament participants do NOT have to be present at the Captain’s Meeting if they have pre-registered, but are strongly encouraged to try to make the meeting. The Captain’s Meeting will serve a couple of different purposes:
1) A last minute Q & A regarding rules will be done, starting at 7:00PM; 2) Day-Of Registrations can be handled at this time for those who have not pre-registered.

Important Times-Please Read:
The Tournament shooting will be held for two days starting Friday, October 26, 2012 and ending Saturday, October 27, 2012. On Friday, participants can start shooting upon sufficient light, and need to announce their arrival in the Murrells Inlet Jetty by 6:00 PM, and will need to have their fish weighed by 7:00 PM. On Saturday, participants can start shooting upon sufficient light, and need to announce their arrival in the Murrells Inlet Jetty by 4:00 PM, and will need to have their fish weighed by 5:00 PM. These times are critical and failure to abide by them may result in your disqualification. You have up to two days to get your diving drops and/or to enjoy the full benefit of what you may have paid for with a charter boat. However, you are NOT required to hunt two days if you decide one day is enough.
Participants agree and promise that only fish shot on Friday and Saturday, October 26-27, 2012 will be presented for weigh-in. The Tournament Challenge Committee has full discretion to rule on any questions on this matter.
The Awards Ceremony & Expo will be on Saturday, October 26, 2012, at 7:00 PM at Crazy Sister Marina. The marina is located at 4123 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
The fish weigh-in scales will open at 2:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. Weigh-in must be concluded by 7:00 PM on Friday and by 5:00 PM on Saturday. That means you can be in line anytime BEFORE either of those times. If you are not in line by 7:00 PM on Friday and 5:00 PM on Saturday, your fish will not be weighed and you will be disqualified. This rule is strictly enforced. If you make it to line at 7:01 PM on Friday or 5:01 PM on Saturday, or after, you will be
disqualified. Please remember, it is not necessary to dive both days. But each day you dive, you must weigh the fish for that day. The committee will tabulate winners from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM on Saturday.
REGISTRATION
1. Early registration is $75.00 for adults and $25 for youth. Early registrations are due by midnight on October 11, 2012. Shooter T-shirt sizes are guaranteed for early registrants.
2. Late registration will be $99.00 for adults and $45 for youth. Late registrations are due by midnight on October 24, 2012.
3. Day-of registrations can be purchased only at the Captain's Meeting Thursday night, October 25th at Inlet Sport's Lodge. The cost for a day-of registration is $109 for adults and $65 for youth.
4. Address and Fax: Murrells Inlet 2020, P.O. Box 1357, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, Fax: 843-357-2913.

More official rules and regs coming soon. Thanks for your interest.

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

I am really excited or this one. Is there any place to set up a "have extra spot/need a ride" for those those looking for extra crew to fill out boats or those that don't have them. I know this has helped other tournaments in the past.

Any of these or the local forums would be a ood place to start, or perhaps have a main list at the 20/20 that you could leave your name and number on for those looking for rides out/ extra crew and let the individuals contact each other. just a thought

Will present the idea to the committee today. We meet at 3:00 pm. I'll start a new thread on this forum now with your suggestion. You guys will have to revive it to keep it alive.

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

Ladies and Gents,
We're only eight (8) weeks out from the tournament. We've had great response and it sounds like we're going to have a good turn-out. The prize table is looking better everyday, with gear from Zeagle, Sherwood, Armour, AB Biller, and various others. There's also a $500.00 cash prize and a $250.00 cash prize on the table. Sign-up now for the early entry-fee discount. Call 843-357-2007 for more information. You're also always welcome to email me.

As some of you may know, the viz and thermocline have been bad lately, but the Northeast wind we've had lately has been clearing up the water a little. I suspect that within the next 4-5 weeks, we'll have great viz and no thermocline again. The fish have been waaaay offshore lately as well; due to the cold-water upwelling...but with the clean water moving back in, we should have fantastic spearing here shortly. The tournament should be timed just right. Below are a few pics for those out-of-towners. Hope this motivates you to sign-up. Stay tuned to this forum for further updates.

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

sounds like a fun tourney, I will ask my shooting brethren if they would be intersted coming down from Wilmington/WB area. How many charters cater to spearfishing? Any folks that would have open spots they need filling? I would like to come down and participate, I couldnt do the WB tourney because of a surgery, healed up and been killing when the weather permits.

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

Gentlemen,
contact Scuba Express at 843-357-7777 and tell them you're interested in the tournament. They'll either accommodate you on the charter or suggest someone. Vic Dupuis also runs spearing charters and is planning on being here. He can be reached at 610-620-4146. The dive shop above has a running list of people who need rides or have room for divers. They're located right on the inlet and have gear, tanks, fills, etc... The landing is located just across the street from the dive shop. The tournament location, weigh-in, prizes, etc...is located right across the street from the dive shop at Crazy Sister Marina. Everything is centrally located and very convenient. I hope you'll all join us. PM or email me with any questions or comments.

Thanks,

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

Less than one month to go!

Tow Boat Membership, DAN Membership, Shark Shield, Nautilus (in the works), Rods, Reels, Spearguns, Regulators, wetsuits, bags, shirts, restaurant certificates, etc....are all on the prize table! Plus a $500 cash prize and a $250 cash prize. If we have 50 or so participants, pretty much everyone should take home something.

Come and show what you've got. Registration is now open. Call Sue at 843-357-9301.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. Stay tuned for more updates.

Re: Murrells Inlet First Annual Spearfishing Tourney

This tournament is going to be timed just right. Big grouper showing up in less than 150', viz clearing up nicely, and warm water top to bottom. We just returned from two nights offshore, one in 150' and one in 100'. Fish were everywhere and the viz was a pretty 60' and getting better everyday. Hope to see everyone at the Captain's Meeting on October 25th. Make your reservations and registrations now!
