Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!
All of my yellowtail have been killed with a 120cm railgun with 2 bands. Personally it's what I prefer, easy to reload, easy to shoot, moves through the water well. It can be done with a 110, I would add the second band.

I'm contacting Jon about one of his Ulusub 155 mh. Never hurts to have a little extra power when the 45lbs yellowtail of your life comes 20 feet away from you. That is my experience

Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!
120 cm or bigger. Or 55" or bigger. The two are about the
same size. Someone posted earily that a 55" is the same as 140 cm not true. A 120 or 130 really is not a big gun but works pretty good with YT. If you want to take shots a 15' or more you need a gun even longer.

Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!
You can kill a yellowtail with that cressi, but the shafts in those guns are very thin, and will bend easier. I call those "throwaway shafts". Swinging a midhandle at a yellowtail out of the kelp doesn't make sense to me. In open water, you want something with a rear handle that you can aim and that will shoot straight. Any gun from 110cm to 140 cm will work. However, your skill in putting a holding shot through that fish will determine if you land it it not.
That being said, yellowtail are pretty curious. If you know what you're doing, most if the time the swim right up to you...just be ready. |

Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!
Rob Allen 130cm with reel worked well for me with a flopper shaft. Although, don't let the fish run too much after shooting it. I learned that lesson the hard way...they run fast and they run deep. Be aware of your surroundings and the shot placement. If you get good placement, don't be afraid to horse the fish to avoid it diving deep.

Re: Preferred guns for getting those Yellowtail!
Jeremy, Im not to sure the name of the shop but there is a Spearfishing/Freedive ONLY pro shop somewhere down in your area. Id recommend going and speaking with them. They'll have the experience and be able to show you the guns first hand and weed out alot of this guessing game on whats what and whats best. They also most likely fix guns as well, like the shop I go to up hear, you'll be blown away at how many of these fancy custom jobs are in there for repair constantly. Could effect the outcome of your buying deception as it did me. I personally had no budget in mind as I just wanted the best of the best for my situation/taste buds WSB,YT,Dodo's. I ended up with a Riffe NoKaOi, 3 bands, w slip tip. I also have a Salvimar 105 voodoo pro as a backup, its a great gun as well but the Riffe is my bitch. Best of luck to ya man.
