Changes in Life: Lobstering at Age 72
...I never did like night diving for lobster...must be a holdover from goblins in the dark stories as a kid. Life has different values and requires change as you age thru the years. Went from grabbing them while free diving, to hooping with nets last year. Even then, pulling up hoops from 80' for hours took it's toll on my arms and body.
...This year, I am upping my game by purchasing an electric line hauler. Researching the issue on the Alaska sites where tough gear is necessary, I decided (so far) to try the Ace Brutus pot hauler and with it, the "Bulldog" line coiling attachment. This setup coils the line for you as it comes in and keeps your hands off the line except for a few minutes of controlling everything...Good for arthritic hands in cold weather.. Update: (Found the best combo deal at Costco, of all places...item #1240313; $661 inc. tax and shipping..I get another $12 off in cash rebates using my Costco Visa credit card)..This year, I will chase tuna days and try for lobster at nite…. ...Price wise, the Ace is a good value (about $700 online) compared to other haulers that cost $1,000 to $2,000 and can tilt your boat over if the rig hangs up on the bottom....Like in the Frank Sinatra song, I will be humming, "It was a very good year,... when I was 72", as I pull in my tasty dinner and stay nice and dry.... ...Oh, almost forgot, they tagged a 17'er over at Catalina a few days ago. Another boat had a big great white and 2 makos around them while fishing...The 15-16' gw stayed with them for four hours and bumped their boat multiple times; good viewing for National Geographic Shark Week....watching the video of that big dorsal fin slicing across the surface, raised the hair on my neck a little and for a brief moment, I had flashbacks of goblins waiting in the dark... Life goes in a circle...the trick is to stay aboard....another useless Ballew platitude Last edited by Bob Ballew; 09-15-2019 at 05:42 PM. |

Re: Changes in Life: Lobstering at Age 72
When they changed the opening of Lobster Season from midnight to 600 am, my life got a whole lot easier!! Working all day, staying up till midnight, and then having to dive for hours off a boat in the dark, kicked my butt worse each year! 49 Lobster seasons sure takes its toll on a diver.
