Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We found good vis July 4th west of Anclote in 30-45’. Ttb in several spots in 40-45. A hazy 15’ horizontal vis in 30’. The gumbo finally looks to be dying out at least where we were. Bounced around to about 6 spots and found fish at most of them. Ended the day with a cooler of gags, mangos, hogs and a bonus 22” flounder. Got back to the marina just as the sky opened up. Should be great conditions this weekend.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

30 miles west of St. Joseph Sound in 70 ft. we we found excellent conditions. No current, hazy top to bottom and 40 ft. horizontal. No gumbo. Great day, minus the fact it was like Black Friday on the water today.

Here's a pic of a juvenile nurse shark sniffing up my buddy's ass. I yelled at him and he bolted. He came back and the second time he got the point when I trained my gun on him... He finally figured out it was in his best interest to move on.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Went out of Sarasota on Saturday, July 14. Had a great time and met some new divers. Thanks so much for the invite Captain Jeff. We ran about 70 miles south west. We were diving in 150 to 160 feet. Water was crystal clear up until the thermocline at about 70 feet. Swim through about 20 feet of that, and had to get to about 120' to make out the bottom and 130' to ID fish. 75 degrees under thermocline. Refreshing. Didn't get the carbos we were hoping for. Lots of lion fish and big AJ's around. We managed a bunch of red grouper. Not super fishy, but super fun and a lot more experience for me at that depth. This red was 30" and 13.6#. Small school of mahi came in and my buddy grabbed a snorkel and nabbed one of them. Little guys. We got a nice scamp and also nice Lane on H and L.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Dove in 50-60’ West of Clearwater yesterday. The top 20’ was clean but vis was only 15-20’ on the bottom. Fishy though. The Mrs. made short work of her hogfish limit along with a stud ARS and mango. Found some nice gags as well.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Bayport was top to bottom in 20-25’. Skittish gags, but not real fishy. Then we went scalloping. Chazz was dead. No scallops. We had to run up to Homo and better there.

For all you naysayers that say you can’t Freedive, here’s a few my 10yo son shot in the last month in 17-30fsw. He touched the bottom in 35fsw.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Went out of NPR yesterday SW in 55-75 fsw. Great conditions above the water. Didn't start clearing below the surface until about 65 feet. Gumbo is gone and algae and snot seems to be cleared up, but still a bit of fine particulate in the column. Very skittish gags and honestly just not very fishy. Managed a few modest hogs and mangos. I had an off day - shot a nice ARS (only one I saw) but he pulled off the shaft and vanished. Shot a very nice gag that took off like a shot and even following his trail and silt he stirred up with the shaft he got out of visual range due to particulate in the water and I lost both him and the shaft

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

With all the talk about GG terrorizing you guys I’m real curious if the shark shield deters the beast?

I don’t dive without my SS on and have dove a few reefs with the beast on them and have never had issue.

Tried googling Shark Shield vs Goliath Grouper but nothing comes up.

I’m fully aware of how the SS affects sharks but considering GG’s are preditorial and do eat sharks????
