Big reels for Dogtooth
Curious if folks are using the big bluewater reels for doggies or just too dangerous? I've watch a few videos but not seeing any being used, mostly wahoo.

Re: Big reels for Dogtooth
You can do doggies up to say about 40lbs or so with a good reel. Aussie reel probably the best. But, you must know how to control them to use one. The worst thing you could ever do with a doggie is shoot it and let it run. It will wrap on reef and you will lose it and your gear. When shooting doggies you must start the fight the moment you shoot the fish and never let up it. Doggie tactics are to go straight to reef and try and dislodge shaft and by doing so will tie your line and gear on the reef sometimes in places you cannot dive to retrieve.
Much more to shooting big reef fish compared to open water fish such as wahoo. With open water fish you basically shoot them with bungie and let them tire themselves out. Big reef fish must be fought to keep them off structure. |

Re: Big reels for Dogtooth
One problem with Doggies and Reels is that they can make a mess of lines on the bottom. And there is often current. Another is that there can often be sharks. Doggies Sound and are extremely strong. In the currents it's good to have a float anyways so your boat can see you. One strike, two strikes, three, strikes, four strikes, five strikes.. etc. That being said I've landed plenty of Doggies on Reels, but I always was trying to get the Smaller ones. The bigger ones always gave me troubles even with float lines. One thing that definitely helps is thicker reel line. You don't want to give a Doggie a lot of line, so it helps to be able to hold it. So using thicker lines ie 2.2mm-2.5mm+ is best.
