Monster in the Manasquan
Dove the Manasquan inlet today after work for about half an hour. Got a few nice triggers and was climbing up the rocks when I heard yelling and saw a small crowd on the other side of the jetty. A guy fishing on the inside of the north jetty had something huge on which he had been fighting for over 15 minutes but couldnt get close enough to see.
He asked me to jump in and take a look thinking it was just a nice sized bass and assist him in landing it. I hopped back in, the vis about 5ft. as I struggled to look for whatever he had on his line. All of the sudden a giant shape came out of the murk, a massive stingray. It looked to be at least 5-6ft. across and was too long to see the entire body due to the poor vis. He fought it for another 10 minutes before finally breaking it off. Looked like a bluntnose stingray but couldn't find any information to say they grew that large? I've seen them in the inelt before but nowhere near that size. Anyone ever have a similar encounter? |

Could be a wandering southern stingray. They get massive.

Re: Monster in the Manasquan
Roughtail or Southern. Both get really big. We get quite a few southerns starting around now so thats what I would go with too. Really cool to watch rooting around in the sand and they get huge like kfish said. If you have the patience to dive over some shallow sandy areas you can see quite a few right in the surf at times. Especially from belmar south. They let you get really close too. It amazes me that no one steps on them while swiming.

I've seen some huge stingrays that size in Cape May and up North. I'm not sure what kind they are though. They are different than the cow nose rays which are in the 50lb range and normally travel in big schools.

Re: Monster in the Manasquan
Yeah probably a southern or roughtail like kjflyfish and trigger said. It just really surprised me to see a stingray that big around here especially in the inlet.
