OC Hunter meeting-4/15

Kudos again to Steve for organizing another good OC Hunter meeting last night. I really enjoyed hearing Doug Van Mullen's talk on halibut hunting, and I'm definitely going to check out some of the local spots mentioned. Julie Riffe's presentation of the new Riffe masks and snorkel was nice. I especially was impressed by the masks. The silicone rubber on it was incredibly soft and supple; I only wish I could afford some of this stuff. I hope all of you spearfishers in Orange County show up for the club dive this Saturday at Shaw's Cove. Of course, as luck would have it, I have to work this Saturday. Guys, make it a point to join the club!

I enjoyed the meeting too and was glad to see 2 of our local DFG officers show up and contribute to the meeting. They brought new reg books for everyone. The 2004 California fishing regs book has a spearfisherman on the cover! The officers actually had a good sense of humor as well. I spoke with the lady officer (embarrased that I forgot her name already!) and she told a funny story about catching a guy (while in plainclothes, well actually a bikini) taking lobsters in July! She said that he had several, they all looked short, and she got him to just start bragging away about how he takes them all year long!
I wonder what that cost him....

Sweet! I didn't know she was a DFG warden too. She must've been the female warden mentioned in the LA Times article about the lobster poacher that died during a sting operation. I agree; it's great to have the DFG attend to lend us support and help educate us about the local marine life regs.

You don't know how bad I want to post the comment that the DFG guy made about some other overly nit-picky officers, it was classic. But I won't sell him out on that one in hopes of hearing more honesty and humor like that in the future.

When I spoke to Steve this morning at the club dive, he said that he and the officer are talking about putting a specific category on the club web-forum for "ask the DFG". How cool would that be!?
