Smaller Gun for Cali
Hey guys!
I decided that I want to get a smaller gun for bad visibility days, and for crevice/hole hunting. I like the pathos open laser pro 82, but was unsure if that is too small a gun for say bass and sheepshead hunting. I currently have a riffe padauk 2xs so I am used to a good bit of range when I dive. Any thoughts on the functionality of this gun size are appreciated. Cheers, ~Stephen

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
You'll be fine with an 82 for reef fish, plenty of range and power. I use the Pathos 90 for most shore dives and reef fish in So Cal. The only thing I could recommend is upgrading the shaft to like an Addiction shaft especially if you plan on hole hunting and banging it into rocks, that Pathos Sandivik shaft will most like bend.
My buddy Sean uses the 82 Pathos carbon and he slays, and I'm sure he can chime in with his feedback on the gun so far because he's had it for a while.

Yup that's a fine size, I'm getting a pole spear for the same situation but that's just because I have too many damn guns as it is

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
I have a jbl 38 special. its good in kelp and holes. threaded shaft so you can change tips once you smash tips on rocks. doesn't have enough power to bend shaft. range is about 7 feet. good for small game in low viz. 2 bands. has a spectra and bungee as shooting line.
Now is it worth it? I got mine around 300 trigger mech sucks. sometimes shaft doesn't secure. shaft is heavy and drag is insane. the upside its not loud ...floats... wood. Id shoot and reload. small game wouldn't run. their stupid. id go with pathos. *reliable* |

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
My girlfriend and I have been using a Cressi Geronimo 95, but she didn't like how long it was for crevice hunting. So she recently bought a Riffe Padauk 27" instead. We added a third band and doubled the mono length, and it's turned into a nice gun for bad visibility/crevice hunting. Now I am tempted to get one for myself.
We pretty much just go after large lingcod, but will test it out on halibut soon! Edit: I'd probably get the 33" version for just a tad more power. Last edited by Ontogeny; 03-11-2015 at 10:23 PM. |

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
Small guns dont work for fish over than 2lbs. Everyone knows that.
90cm stringer 60cm stringer 60cm bass I advocate for small guns because they teach you how to hunt, not how to take long shots. One is an invaluable skill, the other can be hammered out in a pool in a few hours...

Take a look at a MAKO Predator Pro 2 - 70 cm. A very inexpensive gun (because I sell direct) and it comes standard with a super hard and strong South African Shaft. If you order the open muzzle option, the shafts will have mini-shark fin tabs which make the shaft stronger and tougher than a stainless shaft. All stainless steel: trigger, line release and sear. Comes completely rigged with your choice of hand tied dynema wishbone bands and muzzle bungi and shooting line - with an unconditional 3-yr warranty for LESS than $170.. http://www.makospearguns.com/Product...uctCode=MPP2GR thanks dano http://www.makospearguns.com/why-buy...rgun_a/290.htm

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
Neither of these experiances were in cali but for bugs in Mexico (guide supplied so I assume legal) I used a riffe 00 27" i belive is the overall length and with 3 bands capability im sure you could do a triple wrap for some range. Here in Tx at jetties or in the lake I use a Mako 70 cm and it works fine 3-12'

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
Hey Stephen come over the shop and bring your other gun with you. I will set you up with the right tool. A 70cm gun will not cut it for reef hunting in Cali FYI. Very very limited to just holes.
Your best choice would be either the Pathos 82 or even 90. I would go with the 90 if you intent to do mostly reef hunting with the occasional hole search. If you want exclusively for hole then a 75cm might be great. Pathos guns can handle plenty of power and the reverse trigger lends to more band stretch so buying an 82cm gun would be like buying a 92 of another brand. Tyler with his 82cm Pathos at a local dive Kyle with his 90 at a local dive Me and Kyle at the PCC with a 75 and a 90 Big Jim in Northern Cali with some monsters Hole hunting in Catalina with my buddy Richie with my 75 Just a few examples of the lengths you should be looking at 75, 82, 90 Pathos Laser spearguns.

Re: Smaller Gun for Cali
I highly recommend not getting anything smaller than a 90. My avatar fish was taken with a single banded 90. Very capable sized gun that you will be thankful you have when a behemoth swims in front of you. Sometimes penetration sucks even with the 90, I can't imagine with a 60..
