Lionfish Survey

The Emerald Coast Reef Association (ECRA) is conducting a research survey of Florida Divers and Spearfishermen and women. The survey is to help us develop a Lionfish Population Control proposal.

In order for any population control program to be successful, we need to understand the dive habits of a wide range of divers (at every skill level) from around the state.

The survey is an online “point & click” with simple multiple choice questions. It takes 5 minutes or less to complete.

Here’s direct link to the survey service we are using: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/M62SQJ7

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Lionfish Survey

I am bumping this survey request to see if we can get a few more spearos to provide us with some important information.

Although the title of this thread is "Lionfish Survey", several of the questions seek information that will give us ammunition when it comes to getting State and Federal agencies to understand reality. For example:

1) The Feds limit us to a 45 day red snapper season, but don't understand when we tell them most recreational fishermen work 5 days a week, and if a weekend gets rained out, we don't take any fish. The survey asks a couple of question dealing with "how high do the seas get before you won't go out?"

2) Over 60% of the artificial reefs dropped in Florida are in Federal waters. We need data that shows the benefit of dropping more reefs in State waters. My organization has dropped hundreds of tons of reefs in Federal waters because they have the only permitted areas. Would you rather drive 20 miles offshore and dive in 120ft of water, or drive 8 miles offshore and dive in 80 ft of water. My fuel cost and bottom time tell me we should drop reefs in State waters, but we need as many divers as possible to take the survey to back us up.

3) In another thread I was asked if we could get Sen Gaetz to allow us an extra snapper for 20 dead lionfish. One of the survey questions deals with the possiblity of setting up a voucher system to take out-of-season fish in return for turning in a number of lionfish.

Re: Lionfish Survey

Here is one more bump.

My wife, Candy, is giving a presentation at the Lionfish Summit next week hosted by the FWC . The following week, she is giving a presentation to the Florida State Senate appropriations committee. She will be presenting the results of the "Lionfish Survey" at both events.

This is not a meaningless survey!

The results are being briefed to the real decision makers in Florida. If we want any chance to influence artificial reef building in State waters (which will increase the biomass of the fish we target and save us gas by putting reefs within 9 nm of the coast), now is the time. Last year, Candy's efforts added $150,000 in artificial reef funding to the State Budget. This was done at no extra cost to the taxpayer - just moving wasted money to a good cause. The last study performed by the FWC shows that for every one dollar spent on artificial reefs, $131 is put back into the economy.
