resonable price for new lower unit

I am completely at the mercy of the mechanic and you nice folks.

I have a late 90's model 90 hp outboard yamaha that needs a new lower unit. Mechanic says they cant get rebuilt/ used ones only new, and they run 2100$ that sound right to you all?

My buddy got a brand new Chinese aftermarket outdrive on Ebay for $1100?

Can't remember if it was OMC or Merc, I will call him.

I am sure the entire book value of that engine is < $2000. Have you tried a boat salvage yard? Perhaps from a boat that was sunk, where the top end is shot, but the lower unit fine. Uncle Ike left a few of these around.

Find another mechanic/shop. I have a local guy here in Ms. that will rebuild and install for a little over $600. (225 yam). Keep looking.

Re: resonable price for new lower unit

Try stern drive engineering in oldsmar florida they just came out with some outboard lower units with a 3 year warranty.I bought a whole alpha one outdrive from them for $1300 1 year ago. i had a problem with the lower unit because
of a bad shifter cable they replaced it in 3 days no questions asked.
