New RPV Reef Systems taking Place: 6/5/20

...A new reef system is currently being built in front the Trump Golf course. The Coastal Commission has approved the construction of 25 modules of rock over a one-mile stretch of ocean. The first six reef modules have been put in place within the last 3 weeks. Fish and lobster are already taking up residence.
...Located in about 57 feet of water, the fourteen-foot high reef structures will likely have kelp growth within a year or two and that in turn, should attract baitfish, lobster and probably, wsb….
...Successful implementation of the project is a result of efforts by the CCA to utilize funding from the Monsanto chemical settlement over 20 years ago, awarded to offset the damage from chemicals dumped in the ocean off Palos Verdes. The project will continue thru the summer and into fall. Boaters need to be alert to the buoys, barges and equipment located in this area...
...For more information, check out the Coastal Conservation Association of CA website at: ccacalifornia.org

The super size Bluefin are out there and moving n/w...This week, the largest landed was 318 pounds, one of four caught on just one boat...most of the action is currently 34 miles out of Pt. Loma at 32/117 area. By July, the fish should be up off San Clemente island if my guess is correct....Could be the year of a 400 lb. record for a diver...Hoping to explore more areas off San Nicolas island this year....Last year, my largest Bluefin was just over 65 lbs. This time, I plan to take lots of live bait for chum and am rigged with larger fishing and diving gear to do combo trips, based on conditions...In July, our big trip will be centered on either side of the full moon...

Re: New RPV Reef Systems taking Place: 6/5/20

People may want to become familiar with, or even join ($35) the CCA, Coastal Conservation Association. 2 of their Board members, Bill Shadd of AFTCO and Paul Byrd of Argos, just spoke at our Long Beach Neptunes June 3rd ZOOM meeting.
They brought to our attention California Bill AB 3030
which would "declare it to be the goals of the state by 2030 to protect at least 30% of the state's land areas and waters"

Right now I believe 16% to be protected.

Glad to hear of a new reef being created!

Also Jeff that is a scary freakin California bill. If they doubled the size of the MLPA closures there would be barely anywhere left to fish.
