Found a pearl in my ab, what next?

I found a nice little pearl in one my abs over the weekend. It's about the same size and shape as a corn kernel with a blemish on one side but one very nice good side (see pictures) and the rock that seeded it is exposed. I weighs .9g (4.5 carats) and it's pretty symmetrical - looks ready for a simple pendant. The pictures don't look the best, a little yellower and darker than reality.

Since good, constructive ideas come up on this board every once in a while, I wanted to see what you guys thought. I know ab pearls are rare and valuable, but at the moment, I'd like to keep it because it's pretty cool. So if you have any ideas on how to mount it or people I should talk to about it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jon

That is a very nice pearl. I think you should stow it away for kids down the road (i.e. if you don't have any yet) or your future wife (if you are single). Or your mom might like it. A jeweler would mount it on the blemished side. Looks like it would make a nice pendant. Technically, I believe it is illegal to sell because wild Red Abalone are not allowed to be commercialized. Here are a couple of pearls I found and had mounted. One of them looks so much like a male sex organ that my wife is sometimes reluctant to wear it!

Damn, those are some really nice ones, but I can see why your wife doesn't wear the second one. I don't blame her. How many abs have you gone through to get those? Also, I'm just curious to know why you added the studded cap to the second one - was it broken or jagged on the end?

Thanks man. That's sort of what I had in mind, but just didn't think to sketch it up. The shape of the thing just makes it ready to mount it just like that; I'm glad someone else saw that too.

The horn shaped pearl was unstable on the tip - I found it in the tip of the membranous sack that holds the gonad (I guess that makes it a scrotum!).
There was no choice but to cap it that way unfortunately.

I think most pearls get thrown away unknowingly - I would guess that about 1% have a decent pearl and maybe .1% have and outstanding pearl but who knows. I once saw and ab that was full of pearls - about 40 and all basically round, small but with good color

You should take it to your doctor, and tell him you passed it while pissing.

save it until you get the match and make a set of ear rings for a friend. I never looked inside and probably tossed them out. you are a lucky dog.

I went to Chermhoffs jewelry in Fort Bragg and had a ring made for my wife. It looks nice and it is unique. Good find on your pearl.

Congrats on the score, all mine are the size of BB's
Brian Gross (divingdesigns) is a custom jewelery maker over in Napa and may have some ideas for your pearl. http://spearboard.com/member.php?u=25498

X2 on selling it most likely being illegal.
I can't find it in the regs, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it's illegal to sell any part of a red abalone taken under a sportfishing licence (including the shells, and everything inside).

Mr. Banks, that's a nice pearl, but I wouldn't wear it either

Re: Found a pearl in my ab, what next?

Thanks for the plug Rich. Dont sell it I could hook you up with a basic 14k gold cap and bail for that thing and drill it and glue it for you, I should be able to find a stock finding for it in a jewelry catalog. send me a PM Its a nice looking pearl and the cap would cover the blem at the top.
