New MPAs Approved on Northcoast by F&G Commission (MLPA Maps)

Here is the map of the MPAs for the north coast region approved by the Fish & Game Commission on Wednesday. They may go into affect January 1, 2013 at the earliest. They will not affect diving opportunities this year.

http://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.as...64&inline=true

Big win for divers, fishermen and tribes. We kept most of the important dive spots and kept the MPAs at least ten miles away from all the ports and harbors.

The red areas are no-take. The blue areas allow take, but some species will be restricted. You'll have to look up the regs for each one.

The biggest new State Marine Reserve, the Ten Mile SMR, is the biggest impact on diving and fishing. The closed area will encompass the area known locally as "Orca Inn" and start at the mouth of the Ten Mile River and go north all the way up to the Cal Trans public access, including Kibesillah, Pacific Star Winery and Seaside Beach.

The Point Cabrillo Reserve was expanded slightly to the north to include Frolic Cove. This was a marginal dive site anyway because no urchin take was allowed since 1976 and it was an urchin barren.

Other than that, there isn't much impact on our public access dive sites. Irish Beach, Albion, Van Damme, Mendocino Headlands, Fort Bragg, Mackerricker, etc will remain open. Aside from the existing reserve at Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, there are no new MPAs between Point Arena and the mouth of the Ten Mile River.

North of the Ten Mile Reserve, Westport remains open, all the way up to Cape Vizcaino. Maybe Brandi can chime in on Humboldt/Del Norte sites that were closed.

Thank you Jim for the detailed update, and Brandi also. I think it was mentioned very early in the process if the stakeholders could come together with one proposal it would be hard for the process to substitute something else. I did appreciate some of the comments made by Director Bonham he seems like a stand up man for the job.

BTW: I also noticed that in August they will be having an election of officers... interesting.

Here are some links that may be helpful for all California Marine Protected Areas.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/mpa_summary.asp (California's Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network)

linked from the link above
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/ncmpas_list.asp (North Coast Marine Protected Areas - NOT IN EFFECT YET!)

Drop down menus for each MPA give summary of take allowance and location.

For those who want to access the existing MPAs via your smart phone (MPA mobile website) and/or view/print a guidebook -both are located to the right hand side of both above links.

Safe diving, Brandi
