Big ass carp
hey folks,
Its been a long while since I last posted on here but I was out doing some freshwater spearing and I caught a carp that I just had to share. before gutting it the monster weighed 18 pounds! definitely the biggest freshwater fish I had ever speared and I'm glad I got him because I've been trying to all summer. The vis in Lake Wa was excellent for some reason when I was diving and made finding him a hell of a lot easier. I saw several trophy bass out there too but I have so many in my freezer already I didn't shoot at them. here are some pics of the Carp I got and some bass from earlier trips. |

Re: Big ass carp
Wow! Was it hard getting a shaft through the scales on that beast?

Re: Big ass carp
If the pics are of bass that were speared, best that they don't load...not legal in Washington or Oregon. If they were hook and line, let's see 'em!

Re: Big ass carp
Oh dang! I didn't know that. Do you know what part of the WDFW rules pdf it is in? I'd like to check it out. Also to answer the previous question it most certainly was, but I got in pretty close

Re: Big ass carp
Nice fish! But as was said - the only game fish you can spear are fish in the ocean. Fresh water gamefish are a no no.

Re: Big ass carp
It's on page 15 of the pamphlet, under general freshwater rules. The good news is that in Washington you don't need a license to spear carp, there is no closed season, no minimum size, and no bag limit. The bad news, carp is the only freshwater fish you can shoot.
I know, it's a total drag, and a pretty arbitrary prohibition. I think that Utah is the closest state that has reasonable freshwater spearing rules. We've been trying to get Oregon Fish and Wildlife to change their regs, but it is a long and complicated process. And I agree with North Star, nice fish! |

Re: Big ass carp
I found this page to be pretty useful, though it doesn't mention spearing in particular

Re: Big ass carp
We might have to go diving next summer Michael. I'll show you what big carp look like haha. But as everyone else already stated, game fish are a no no in OR and WA. Especially if you don't Photoshop the holes out
