Lake Champlain NY, any locals?

Hey everyone, I'm debating on heading up to Lake Champlain for some drum spearing. Anyone here ever spear there and have tips? Or a good park /dive location?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Drew

Why do you say that? It clearly states that spearfishing (not including spear guns) is legal on Lake Champlain for roughly 7 species, including drums.

And can you even use a band on a pole spear? If its anything like jersey and pa freshwater laws. You are basically limmited to stabbing at trash fish with a stick.

I will double check my emails, but when I contacted DEC they made it sound like a polespear with band was legal. I will check and come back.

Exclamation Re: Lake Champlain NY, any locals?

So an update, I got ahold of a new individual today who clarified things for me. Apparently if you use a polespear you're fine. But if you so much as put a strong rubber band on it, let alone a good elastic band, it becomes a gun.

Spear = legal
Spear + elastic band = "speargun"
Speargun = illegal

So basically the wording is dangerously misleading... Glad you inspired me to check again! Looks like my week off won't be spent in NY waters 🤔.

Didnt mean to spoil your fun.Thats how nj is. And they all write laws that can be interpreted different ways. They do it on porpose i think$$$$$$$$. If it were legal. Some cop would interpret it the way he sees fit and prob give ya trouble anyway. We live in and around the no fun for you states.

Re: Lake Champlain NY, any locals?

I really have no intrest in shooting trash fish. But if i wanted to do it bad enough i'd probably have a detatchable band on a pole spear. What fun would it be otherwise? The average joe breaks the law 10x a day. Whats a lil band law gonna hurt.

Daigz,

You just need to come to the Vermont side of the lake, free dive spearfishing is now legal. Granted its only for trash fish but it is legal.

Oh you didn't spoil any fun, that's the states job .

And yea I could pop over on the other side I suppose. They are "trash" fish, but it all tastes the same in a fish fry! I'll have to look into popping over VT way this summer.

And you're not kidding about people breaking the law. I came across a video on YouTube of someone using a speargun in Lake George last year to take bass.
