Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .
When I was a kid, I remember reading about a school of triggerfish nibbling some Air Force guy to death off Puerto Rico.

Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .
Last time I was out I nailed one through the eyes and the first thing I did was saw through his head. Even after his gourd was hanging on by a few threads the bastard still tried to bite! I then shot another one whilst the first was still on the shaft. The second one started biting the first on the shaft! Greedy little buggers, all they want to do is eat, even with a shaft in their backs! Tasted great though!

Try shooting and gutting a trash fish, then sit back and watch. If there are any decent triggers around they will usually be first on the scene.
A razor knife makes quick work of the skin....outline the fillet with the razor knife and the proceed with the fillet knife as usual. With a sharp blade it's like cutting paper. |

Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .
this 10.6 lb took a chunch out of my knee at 120 ft. You may see a rubbing of him in bonefish grill soon. They are great eating, good for ceviche or any ole way to cook them. I cut the skin from the inside out on all fish, so triggers have not really been a problem at all.
"Burt, hows my rubbing comming?" |

Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .
Ok, sorry to be "that guy", but on the Florida fish and game website, triggerfish fall under the ornamental reef fish category, and are listed as illegal to spear. I just started spearing, and was out the other day and saw a few triggerfish and left them alone because of that. So, are you guys just kinda being sneaky about spearing triggers, or is there something I don't know. Not trying to lecture or yell at anyone, I'm just legitimately curious. Thanks.

You cannot shoot oceanic triggerfish. Grey triggerfish are 5 or 10 per person. Great eating

Why do you say that? I've shot many of them?

The purple crazy ones are scrawled filefish.

Unless you are referring to Queen triggerfish. Those have live well landing requirements.

Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .
for all you guys getting bit by triggers...just cut the mouth tendons...knife in the mouth blade across the corners of the mouth, cannot bite, takes less time than braining
