FRA Newsletter

I've been a way for a while. Not sure if I am still allowed to post here as an East Coaster since the board seems to be primarily politics and California now.

(The following is not an advertisement)

I found it a little odd that the FRA would send the following news letter defending people who were clearly breaking fisheries laws and got caught. I fully support the focus of the organization in defending further, unnecessary regulations on our fisheries based on bad science, but the article seems to be more of a political discussion on the definition of the right to privacy. Seems defending those who got caught could easily be misconstrued as support for those breaking laws we don't agree with.

Law enforcement or invasion of privacy?

This may be old news to some, but is worthy of passing along given the draconian regulation of our recreational fishery.
A drone has officially been used to issue fishing citations in Florida. From the FWC law enforcement report in October:

The vessel Peter Gladding and crew along with NOAA officials spent six days in the Dry Tortugas testing an unmanned, remote-controlled drone called, "the Puma AE." The Puma AE captures images, video, and has infrared capabilities. During the test flight, it was used to map corals, locate turtles, and track migrating birds. While in flight, the small aircraft Puma AE is extremely stealthy and can barely be seen or heard and can be launched, operated, and recovered from small vessels. Because of its numerous attributes, officers were quick to realize that the aircraft is also perfect for law enforcement applications. The operation concluded with Officers Martin Messier, Raul Pena-Lopez, and Josh Peters issuing two federal citations. The first citation was issued onboard a diving vessel operation that illegally entered, moored, and conducted diving activity within the Tortugas North Ecological Reserve without an access permit. The second citation was issued on a sailing vessel actively fishing illegally within the Tortugas South Ecological Reserve. The officers also issued a citation for a marine sanitation device violation after they discovered the y-valve was not properly secured.

Note that this is a federal operation. Spying on FL citizens with federal dollar-supported drones has become acceptable? Life, liberty the pursuit of happiness and the right to privacy and be free from unreasonable search and seizure all mean NOTHING to the NOAA/NMFS.

Have you or anyone you know of been issued a citation using drone video? Please contact us at FRA@tampabay.rr.com.

High noon approaches for the showdown between good and evil, right and wrong in our fisheries management.

There is a solution. It involves YOU. Stay tuned for your CALL TO ACTION later today.

Again, thank you for your continued support and advocacy. Without your voice we would not be heard! Become a member or donate today so that we can continue the fight!

Re: FRA Newsletter

Odd that the FRA is concerned about the larger issue of privacy? Odd that we sent out the information?
If you've got nothing to hide, why would you complain? Said the despot to his people. Wiretapping, surveilance.
And, did we say NOT to use it?
Actually, we've been in touch with FWC regarding the parameters around its use.

Surprised by the readiness to give up one's personal expectations of privacy and liberty.

And thank you for your continued support. I personally assure you thatthe FRA supports the investigation, prosecution and punishment of those who violate our resource laws.

So does the FRA support the use of drones to monitor recreational fishing?
