Re: Cash for Lionfish
That photo is just a hoop net with an artificial structure , in the middle.
I see multiple anticipated problems associated with hauling one these from 160 ft . Your buoy line to the surface would cause the side of the net to lift in any strong current ,blocking entry and access, an uneven initial haul pressure could cause the bag to spill over on the way it would need constant pressure on the puller the full transit up meaning pulling in a 4 ft sea it might be easy to spill your catch, if the line goes slack on a trough of a wave . also the idea of a 30 day soak time seems like a long time between paychecks. believe me , there has to be something more efficient than a artificial FAD with an open top. I've pulled hundreds of hoop nets for lobster at night and even in shallow water it can be a task . also essential it land on the right bottom without "snags" and not move in the current here in deep water which often runs 2 knots or more. That design will require the pulley davit to pivot to allow the hoop to land on the deck . Not something you do alone , so you need a crewman. hope it works though , I like the simplicity |

I don't know of a single fish house that will accept a week old, ungutted of any kind of fish. Most smaller boats just can't get & maintain a holding temperature of 27 - 28 degrees for 7 days. If you want to haul dry ice and freeze whole, ungutted fish for 7 days, but no boat could afford that expense. This also might be a good time to post your Florida fish house license number so divers can verify that you can legally purchase their catch, cause we all gotta keep it legal with the paperwork.

You are correct! The original question was about 2-3 days on the boat. But I have seen 2-3 days on ice and than 2-3 or more at a market before going to a customer. |

Re: Cash for Lionfish
Went to your website
Almost sounds like you don't want a trap that is "too" efficient that might eradicate them , sounds like you want lionfish to be a permanent staple with a sustainable , continuous yield ; so that as your website put it "create a centralized distribution system" I thought the idea was to eradicate or kill them all so we stabilize out native fish populations. That is the problem with our current lobster trap bycatch harvest now. The escape slot on the opposite side of your "pull" side allows small lobsters and fish to be ejected on the way up , losing any small lionfish which go on to repopulate the same spot I just pulled from . While I don't have the misconception that we can rid our waters of all lionfish , we can put a major dent in it with more efficient gear. That gear has to be able to pull them off the structure they already live on and retain them , not let them swim to another rock when the current changes direction. I fish trapped for years , and most fish are caught in the first 45 minutes using the right bait. When we switched to using shrimp trash our landings skyrocketed. The yellowtails would swim in, essentially become loose , live bait , swarm the shrimp trash , and the groupers enter to get the yellowtails who simply swam out of the wire mesh . Leaving the groupers behind . I have watched it happen while diving the traps to see how different baits worked . We changed from a 2 day soak to a 2-3 hour soak , used 1/4 of the traps (down to 4) and caught more fish and had a better looking product with out any "trap rash". This also increased the amount of hogfish and muttons who entered for the crabs and rock shrimp. Pheromone attractant baits are not likely to last a 30 day soak , and would only be effective in initially attracting lionfish short term to the FAD. One thing I don't understand is why FWCC isn't farming Hogfish , grouper , snapper fry to a releasable size , to give those "overfished" species a head start and higher retention , survival ratio . Why aren't they developing "sterile" lionfish as they do other species (mosquitos) That would produce unfertilized eggs when spawning with "wild" lionfish ? More than one way to skin this catfish . I also wonder what the population of lionfish is the areas they used the "dispersant" during the BP spill. That seemed to kill everything when sprayed . Fish were swimming underneath the oil sheen but once the spray was used it became a dead zone. So just is Reefkeepers actual goal ? To eradicate an invasive species will profit them temporarily or to create a long term fishery that becomes the norm for our ecosystem at the detriment of other native species by using gear that isn't "too" efficient and allows the continuous repopulation of areas harvested ? just exploring the problem from different angles ; and I must ask , Is reefkeepers or any persons or entities associated with reefkeepers receiving State or Federal funding, Corporate , or institutional funding ? In the form of Grants , support , and or Loans ? Not questioning your efforts , incentive , yes , it is a friendly question . I just feel that potential sellers and or users should know the base line facts. Since the mission statement is to "create a centralized distribution system " Many might read that as another way of saying "create a monopoly " Got to go , the tide is in an hour , the wind is at 5 knots , visibility 25 ft , time to harvest . |

Re: Cash for Lionfish
who is Fogg ?
and when did become acceptable not to gut fish immediately ? I know the yellowtail guys who fish here in the lower keys ship their tails full of chum , ungutted to Miami to fish houses , all I can say is NASTY. I would not eat that fish . Now the lionfish aren't eating oily chum , but as I said before , what about cross contamination from regurgitated stomach contents ? who is prepping your fish ? I know , I make you wish you had that 3 rd cup of coffee. Now I'm going fishing . |

Cash for Lionfish
The goal of ReefSavers is to control lionfish populations because we don't believe that full eradication is possible.
We have the ability to market and introduce the lionfish into the market place as a means to commercialize them to build insensitive for divers/fishermen to be more active in the removal of lionfish. The funds we raise go towards many lionfish removal efforts including trap R&D, public awareness and research. The lionfish in our waters poses new challenges for us as we look to protect our waters and creation of a sustainable fishery. Our initial goal here at ReefSavers was to create a steady supply to restaurants that would allow them to keep lionfish as a staple menu item and not just a special. But there is much more that goes into that than simple supply. We believe that building this infrastructure. Is key to the continual removal of lionfish. We currently do not receive any form of grants, federal or corporate funding. We simply got tired of our 9-5 wanted to do something better and spend more time on the water. We host monthly awareness fundraising events to help with our expenses and hope the restaurants will continue to serve it on their menus after seeing the public response. We currently do not receive any residual funding after the event is complete. We supply the restaurants during the events and after they are free to buy from whom ever they wish. Our goal is that they just continue to serve lionfish on their menus. ReefSavers will evolve in the future and we will look towards other water based environmental areas to dive into but currently lionfish is our main focus |

Re: Cash for Lionfish
$5 a lb any size is common this time of year
P.S it's winter time on spearboard and people like to argue more than not.... BTW to the people thinking fish cannot stand 7 days from boat to market to buyer, i've sold YFT that was less than 6 hours old to a market. Standing right next to our YFT were some shipped from Costa Rica... Imagine how long that had been sitting on ice. Don't believe everything you hear |

Do you have a Commercial Saltwater Retail / or Wholesale Dealer License? And will you be filling out a State Trip Ticket for our catch? Thanks, Joe. |
