RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
Hi, I’m planing to come fishing for the Columbus day long weekend. I have a sit on top Sea Kayak and I’ve already been to King’s rock and Sachuest point in July. There was small stripers and tautogs (wasn’t open then) Is there still chances to see stripers at this time in Kings rock or beavertail or black point? ... or i’m I better to spend half of my pay check and go Block Island with a charter?
Don’t get me wrong: I’m also interrested in tautogs, scup, black seabass, dogfish...!!! Lol Thanks guys Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk |

Re: RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
Hi Sly1962, You probably have better chance on BI, especially with experienced captain, but it's pricey. I do a lot of shorediving in RI, and October is a great time for this. I see more stripers in the bay this year than previous years (just shoot one in Jamestown). There are plenty of spots and you have even more options with kayak. ft.Wetherill, BeaverTail, Hull cove, Dumplings, KettleBottom, Mackrel cove in Jamestown; Sachuest, Kings, Castle hill in Newport; Pier5, Bass rock, Black pt., pt.Judith in Narragansett... you name it.
Hopefully visibility will improve in two weeks. I also bet Columbus day will be very crowded at BI (hate to dive between fishing boats). Good luck, dive safe, enjoy the ocean! Miro. |

Re: RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
I dive mostly in Canada, but last year and this year my buddy and I have been to several places on the east cost and we have really enjoyed the experience. We have been to Harpswell and Cape Neddick MA, we've been to the Rye ledge, Sakonet point, King Rock, and Block Island.
As mentionned I plan to be around next week (oct 5,6,7) Would one of you be willing to join me for a dive ? Envoyé de mon SM-T580 en utilisant Tapatalk |

Re: RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
Sly1962, I had camping trip scheduled on this weekend (up in Maine LOL), however there is a big chance that it will be canceled. If weather permit, I can join you on kayak or shore dive. Let's touch base early next week.

Re: RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
There is a campground in Melville just up from the Hinkley Piers, Burma Road, Weaver Cove. You can find fish in the bay at the piers, the jetties, andalong the bay towards Newport or back intowards Mount Hope.
Get a chart, consider the winds and tides. Incoming tides are best for the bay and piers. Southerly winds screw up off the front and better for bay areas protected by shore. Northeast winds are the best, get out front Kings Beach, Seal Rock etc. This is a great time of year when the schools come in and are getting ready to migrate |

Re: RI Shore diving or Charter diving?
Went Jamestown on Sunday with Sly. The water condition and visibility were awful, however (after couple hours) we were able to find fish and both limited on Tautogs.
Would recommend Sly as experienced diver and good buddy Hope to see you in our area again, you are always welcome! |

Thanks to you all for your suggestions and specially to Agador for coming for a dive with me. I definitely will come back to explore more of Rhode Island shores!
