Boating Near Beaches

Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough but I can't find anything that clearly describes rules/regulations to boating near beaches, specifically Ventura County.

For example, if I wanted to pull in close to shore at County Line to pick someone up how close can I get (assuming the swell presents no safety concerns)?

From CA dept of Parks and Recreation:

The speed limit is 5 mph, or less, within 200 feet of a swimming beach or boat dock, or within 100 feet of a swimmer. Follow all posted signs and marked buoys for speed and direction when operating your vessel. SLOW IS PRO!

Pretty sure you're good to go, just operate with extreme caution.

Yeah man, the thing with boats and beaches is "just be cool".

Pretend for a moment that you were one of those swimmers snorkeling around at one of those beaches.

Would you want some dick in a boat motoring over the top of your head while you're snorkeling with your family at one of those beaches?

Yeah, didn't think so.

Thanks for the info. Seems like a general rule of thumb and areas that get a lot of use may have local law that could definitely be more restrictive. I got an email back from the parks service after I posted this thread and this is their reply:

"Power boating along the California coastline within 1,000 feet of shore or within the surf zone is regulated by local jurisdictions. You can check with the Channel Islands Harbor Patrol for questions about local rules. (805)973-5959.

For Santa Monica beach area, contact the Los Angeles County Harbor Patrol. At (310) 482-6000."

I'll try giving them a call at some point and post up again if they have anything useful to report.

Thank you for your concern but I have no need to pretend as my family, friends and myself are often one of the swimmers, surfers or divers at these beaches.

No fish but guaranteed limits of beach truffles down by the houses, just look for spots that have heavy dog traffic.

Re: Boating Near Beaches

It might vary by county but down here in SD. Noway no How, boats near shore. Can not launch from public beaches except from a couple.

I go to a shallow reef to get some bugs and the lifeguards are always pushing me further out with their mega phone.

I thought it would be awesome to launch the skiff from any beach..No can't do.

Re: Boating Near Beaches

Did you get an answer from Ventura? I had always assumed it was the same as LA County (nothing with an engine closer than 300 yards from shore).

I have not. Every beach will fall under local jurisdiction so as far as I can tell there is no general rule for Ventura County. If you know what beach you wanted to get in close to, you would probably get the best results by running it through the Ventura County Harbor Dept.
