Out of JP 9-8-18

Saw ORANGE colored water out to about 17 miles with small dead bait fish scattered about. Blue water NW at 23 miles out at around 80'. Water temp. 86F. till near the bottom down to 82F. Not bad. Horz, vis. was around 25'. Dive #1 only small fish. Dive #2 nearby produced 2 hogs. Back in before the thunder storms.

Thanks for post. Not super encouraging. Stayed onshore and played some sand Vball. No issues (yet) with running around in the sand on Clearwater beach, taking deep breaths, etc. When red tide was real bad years ago couldn't even take a deep breath in without coughing. Headed over to my buddy's dive boat on Island Estates after. First sighting for me of dead pinfish and grunts this go around. Smelled. Instant headache. Ughhh!

Damn, Topical Storm Gordon didn't help. I think it may have pushed the algae north given the timing.

Here is a recent news article
https://www.tampabay.com/news/Red-Ti...fish_171618836

Quote:
Madeira Beach, Redington Beach and Treasure Island have also been affected, she said. Levy could not provide an overall estimate of how many fish have been found.

Many that floated ashore have been cleaned up by crews from the county and the involved cities that worked throughout the day Saturday. Still, Levy said she expects the clean-up to run through the weekend and into next week, as many dead fish are still floating offshore.

As of Saturday evening, a boat was circling the Intercoastal near Clearwater Pass, scooping hundreds of dead fish off the water’s surface to prevent them from reaching the beach

Re: Out of JP 9-8-18

If you go out of JP. I strongly recommend heading out to at least 80' due to the red tide. Still about a 5 degree thermal change at 70' on the way down or up. 86F down to 82F. Vis. looks great till you hit the thermal. Still good enough for shooting. Some places need to switch to line shaft due to poor vis, (8'-10'). A good size gag can disappear with a free shaft pretty quick.
