Smile Looking into first gun. Any ideas??

Hey all,
Been using a pole spear and looking to upgrade to a gun. Was looking at the JBL elite woody 38. Primary use in California kelp beds going after small-medium sized fish.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Looking into first gun. Any ideas??

I whould go with rob allen or mako,If you don't like that rob allen can be a bit painful to load go with mako for sure if you are diving in the kelp go with a 110cm but if you are diving the reef/kelp go with a 90 or 100cm.IMO go with the 100cm,But if you are really set on a wood gun you have to spend a bit more and go with riffe you will have to spend 165 more dollars but it will be worth it.Rob allen may be a bit harder to load but is a bomproof gun and the best railgun around. Here are some links:http://www.speardeals.com/Riffe_Comp...ies_2_p/32.htm,http://www.speardeals.com/Rob_Allen_...lgun_p/306.htm,http://www.makospearguns.com/category-s/37.htm.FYI the mako oceanic pro is alot better than the predator pro.Good Luck

Re: Looking into first gun. Any ideas??

If I were just starting out and using what I know now to make a decision on a gun, I'd buy a 110cm railgun (open muzzle with a 9/32" shaft) to get me through the winter. It almost doesn't matter the brand, just buy what you can afford. When and spring and summer rolled around, I'd buy another railgun in the 130cm size for further shots in open water. You'll learn a lot with the first one that will help your decision in buying the second one.

Of course im just saying what i would do, if I were you...

Leaning towards the Mako oceanic pro, how much harder is the Rob Allen to load?

Re: Looking into first gun. Any ideas??

not sure if your wanting to use a reel, but mako has a sweet setup for a detachable reel, i dont know what the chances are of you seeing a large target over there... but in the gulf i wont dive without it....

I do have one and the but is just a little painful and we are not talking about a little 70cm gun something like a 100cm or 110cm.Just something you have to get used to.
