Middle Grounds Hog Video

Short video of my brother in law shooting a huge hog yesterday on our first middle grounds trip. You can tell the difference between the gopro3 and gopro4 at that depth (95 feet on the top). https://youtu.be/oYlDkpmc4xs

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

Thanks. I've never noticed how big a difference the 3 and 4 make until putting both in the same video, which I've never done. Maybe the 5 is even better? I'd probably rather spend the money on a drone.

Nice Hog. Did you weigh him?

Just wondering why you anchored up?

16 pounds. We almost always anchor up. It's a fairly easy down to the spot and back to the boat. Especially when it's a new spot. If the waves are nothing we will sometimes use a buoy and have some follow bubbles. That depends a little on who's on the boat and who's in the water.

I've only ever anchored up at night in the Grounds to sleep. Otherwise, we always freeboat.

You never know when the current will be strong or in a different direction on the bottom. Or if someone can't find the anchor line.

And often we will tell the divers to both run the ledge downcurrent and we follow the bubbles. Then they don't have to backtrack into a strong current to find the anchor line or jug.

Just a thought.

What cat are you running? How did she do with a middle Grounds load? Speed/MPG out and back. I always have issues with having enough gas in my old Worldcat. I had to bring extra to go the far northwest Grounds.

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

With the dives being relatively short I would not anchor either.

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

I'm in a 31 Renaissance Prowler. Had 3 divers and 3 topsiders. Fished a lot and dive twice all three together each time. I'll have to go back and look at total fuel burn and trip miles. Dropped boat off for 200 hour service this morning so will be later this week when I can check. We got around 1.4 or so most of the way out at 30 mph or so. Boat holds 260 gallons and again I'll have to check but I think we only used around 150 gallons Key on to Key off.

Those are nice boats. I've been giving serious thought to a 235 Tideline cat myself. With twin 175s it will go 54mph WOT and at cruise (35 mph) will get close to 3 mpg.

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

Would look at the Prowler 246 as well. I'm on my second cat and really like the ride in gulf slop.

Issues I keep running into with anything bigger than a 23 footer is the damn weight for towing Not an issue for my old F250, but I'm leery of towing on the highway anything heavier than 8000 pounds with my Expedition, especially a cat due to the wind resistance.
